Did you notice Penny's last name is Milton and not Widmore in this latest episode? I immediately thought of John Milton, who wrote "Paradise Lost."
Here is a brief description of the poem: "The poem concerns the Christian story of the Fall of Man: the temptation of Adam and Eve by the fallen angel Satan and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden. Milton's purpose, stated in Book I, is to 'justify the ways of God to men' and elucidate the conflict between God's eternal foresight and free will."
To me, that basically defines Lost. MIB is the fallen angel Satan, tempting humankind to evil and destruction. The Garden of Eden is the island itself, a veritable barrier against all that is corrupt in the world. And the conflict between foresight and free will is, at heart, what Lost is all about. Can we humans make the right choice, to fight against our base inclinations, and create a better future for ourselves?
