Eloise: Was I?
Daniel: Theresa is my girlfriend.
Eloise: She is your research assistant! You should be focusing your energies on your work.
Daniel: On my work?
Eloise: Yes, that is what is important..
Daniel: Yes you made it abundantly clear..why would I waste my gift on a woman?
Eloise: I am sorry to tell you Daniel but you will not gonna have time for a relationships. The women in your life will only be terribly hurt.
Daniel: What does that mean?

Charles was hard on Penny, hard on Des...sacrificing his relationship with her and Daniel because of the greater good. It was his job to keep them on their path. Penny, Des and Daniel.
Eloise was hard on Daniel..always..she pushed him. She made steel out of soft metal. She had to keep him on his path. It was her job because he has an extraordinary gift. Because it was his destiny. Greater good.
These are the same things Christian said to Jack. At the time it seemed he just wanted him to become a great doctor but now I wonder was Christian at some point an Other? Who like Charles and Ellie left the island sometime in the past in order to operate from the main land, trying to keep his son on his path for a greater good. Let's not forget that the only reason why Jack went to Australia and got on that plane was to get his father back. If you remember the episode Jack went to Christians room to look for any clues on his fathers whereabouts..he noticed that Christian left his wallet in the room. Perhaps Christian knew what he is suppose to do? Maybe he killed himself? That is why he went to see Claire one more time. To say goodbye..perhaps.
I am guessing that Christian is an Other. Just like Charles and Ellie. He unlike them didn't sacrifice his son but himself in order to get his son on the island. because his son is the greater good. His son is far more important to the whole story than he is.
In Further instructions Boone said to Locke: You have to bring the family back together. I am thinking we have few important families here.
Eloise and Charles have Daniel. Penny is his half sister. Desmond and Penny have child together. Desmond, Charles, Ellie and Daniel are crucial for this story.
Christian has Jack and Claire. Jack is the leader, one of the most important characters of the story if not the most important. Claire is the mother of Aaron (and let's face it the whole season 1 was almost about Aaron)...
And none of them know this..Daniel has no idea his father is Charles and that he has half sister penny, whose husband Desmond is his constant. Desmond has no idea that Daniel guy who saved his life is Pennys half brother and Widmores son. Jack had no idea that Claire is his half sister, meaning he is Aarons uncle. (btw Kate, love of his life, was his adoptive mother) Claire is somewhere perhaps dead, and she has no idea that Christian is Jacks father. And that Jack is her half brother. She also has no idea that Christian is dead and that the main reason why Jack was on a plane was to bring Christians body back to LA.
So the parents basically know everything. And they are all Others. Always one step ahead. Kids are clueless. And it's the way it suppose to be because it is their destiny and they had to be sacrificed for a greater good. So much for a free will.
