Short and sweet.
In the episode where Hurley was leading Ben and Locke to the cabin and Locke had a dream where he saw Horace chopping down a tree, Locke said that Ben killed all the Dharma in the Dharma pit. Hurley said "you and the Others killed all these people?" Ben said, "I did not, their Leader did." Hurley said, "aren't you their leader?" Ben said, "not always."
Well from season 5 it is pretty obvious that Widmore was the leader in 1992 when he was banished from the Island. And he was banished after the Purge because the Others were already in the barracks. Ellie was already off the Island at that time otherwise she would have been around - she probably leaves the Island right after the incident.
Now, whether Jacob told Widmore to Purge or he just wanted to (thinking they made Ellie leave maybe??) remains to be seen. But I don't think he would have been allowed to be banished if Jacob ordered the Purge. Or maybe Widmore was now taking orders from MIB and not Jacob - this is why Ben thinks the cabin is Jacob's home, because Widmore showed him.
I guess we'll find out..
