So if we are saying that Locke is both alive and dead, how did he get that way? The idea is that there are so many possibilities out there in hypothetical land and they are all possible on the island. Why? Because Dharma made it that way!
They look some naturally occurring EM which has magic properties and made time travel out of it. Magic, did I say magic? That’s no good – this is a science analysis of what’s going on in Lost, there’s no such thing as magic. OK, so the EM has properties that I cannot explain, that no one can really explain but the writers have chosen to use as a base for some science fiction. They are saying that it can be harnessed and used to travel through time. So what do they do with this phenomenon? They send a bunny through time, they experiment with some polar bears, and they send people back in time. Physically at first and then they find a new method of time travel, mind time travel. Then experiment to see what happens when you use both at the same time. You get the results of a Schrödinger's Cat experiment.
The island could have always been this way but I think that Dharma made it this way as part of their experiments. To create the Schrödinger's Cat experiment they have sent the island back in time to repeat over and over again. In doing so they have caused a multitude of possibilities. So many alternatives that every possible course of events is conceivable. Since the Cerberus device that keeps all these possibilities separate has malfunctioned they are now all possible on the island at once.
RESET 1/TIMELINE 1???? The incident happened in 1980 which released the EM into the Swan to allow scientists in the Swan to go back in time. They came out in 1979, let’s say, and tried to make changes but by mistake they caused a paradox and time reset. They did something which prevented themselves from going back in time in the first place. MIB and Jacob were given the same abilities as Des. They could see what happened last time and were given a chance to try again. They retained their memories but what time did they go to? They transfer to their new 1979 counterparts, the ones who have just relived their lives without future knowledge. If they had gone back in time to 1974 then their consciousnesses with future knowledge would have transferred to their 1974 counterparts. Time had reset because of the paradox, eventually those scientists were born again and lived their lives until they got to the island and then in 1974 they suddenly have future knowledge. This is how th! e incident is now in 1977 and not 1980 because the scientists with future knowledge were able to complete the work sooner than they had been able to do in the last iteration.
I think that they soon realised they weren’t getting anywhere they weren’t able to change anything because as soon as they did anything significant there was a paradox. So they decided to do some more experiments with this new time travel, this new ability that they had discovered, to mind time travel. They wanted to see if they could make a difference when they mind time travelled. Unfortunately I don’t think that’s possible either. Although this is still just a theory so this part of my recipe here is not quite perfected. Ironically I’ll need to restart the recipe and make some adjustments and clarify what I mean there. Let’s see how this one works out first though. I can always write another theory. That’s the thing with theories isn’t it? Someone said that they found their theories worked better as they were writing it down, I agree.
So getting back to this recipe, I mean theory. I think this may be part of the reason why the Dharma scientists (did I mention again that I think the scientists are Jacob and/or MIB?) went further and further back in time and ended up getting so many variables involved – the Others, the Losties. Now it’s just an entangled mess. Or was that the point? They couldn’t make any changes of consequence. Faraday’s stones in a stream analogy… I think they then started to use the fact that there were many possible scenarios that they’d created to affect the ultimate outcome which for some reason is on the beach. Now if someone can tell me how the events on the beach are the results of this, if someone can tell me how and when the box of the Schrödinger's Cat experiment has been opened or how Jacob is now able to view the results of the changes he’s made in the past then I might be able to tell whether I’ve cooked a cat or a beef casserole.
