I know there has been a great deal of theories and ideas on what the MIB's name could be and its significance. Sorry to revisit, but I researched some names and wanted to share and get some feedback.
First, let's understand that The Trickster in archetypal mythology is really who we are looking at here. (See Karl Jung for more on that)Regardless of his name and what his plans are, we're assuming that he is evil, and probably the apitomy of evil. We have seen The Trickster in almost every religion and mythology throughout the history of human civilization. It is in this research that I decided to compare and derive possible names for our Lost Trickster.
In Christian mythology this is simply Lucifer, Satan, the Devil, what have you. But what else is out there is much more interesting.
The Island is filled with Egyptian writings and references. The Trickster in Egyptian mythology is none other than Seth. Something about that name just seem like it fits with the face of MIB. Seth was always at odds with Horus. The eye of Horus was on one of the tapastries Jacob made with the loom in the foot statue. What does this mean? Any ideas - open for your thoughts here.
The whole thing that gets me is that many believe MIB is named Esau. Well, in Jewish mythology, their Trickster is named JACOB. Esau is the good guy in this one because Jacob deceived Esau into giving him his birthright. Don't take this the wrong way. I think our Jacob is good - very good. I just think this proves that MIB's name cannot be Esau - he's a shmoe who got played by his younger twin brother who wanted what he had.
Anyway, I'm leaning towards Seth, but something tells me he also looks like a Tobias - I don't know why. Another wierd possibility is that they can both be the same person - Jacob - 2 sides of the same special god/person. I say this just because of that last line by the statue with the fish - "Nice to see you Jacob," says MIB. "Nice to see you to," replies Jacob. Are the creators telling us something here by Jacob not saying his name in response? Your guess is as good as mine. Let me know what you think.
