Locke had been told that he was special all throughout his life...but I don't think he was special at all.
Locke was an easy person to manipulate because he always was told he was special even though he really wasnt and the Smoke Monster/ MIB knew that.
I do not believe Jacob had been leading Locke at all. In fact I believe the smoke monster is the one who has been giving John all of his dreams just so he could get to his ultimate goal of killing Jacob.
Anyone could have done what John Locke did, but the Smoke Monster picked him because he was the easiest to manipulate.
