I've listened to the Alt and Reset theories, and I understand they are plausible, and I yet I wonder how it is these things will play out. So I was going to just talk about the practicality of WHH, ALT, & RESET, and no so much the theories themselves
Based on what was shown at Comic Con, I think the reality is that these "teasers" of a reset are just that, "teasers". They're done to keep the conversation going. To keep you guessing. That's why they show needs to happen.
Now in regards to ALT, I think the most practical application of this that you're going to get, is that it may be likely that we will have some consciousness time traveling, like Desmond experience in "Flashes,,,". And if that's the case then it is probably likely that we'll see some main characters flash into them selves during the time of seasons 1-4, and effecting things that we didn't know about at the time. IE: Walt begging Locke not to "Open it", or several of Locke's own weird instances of behavior.
As for an Alternate timeline. Ehhhhh,,, I suppose. Like I said, it's plausible. You'd be talking about the cast flashing into a different timeline that was possible only because they had come to the island in the original timeline, and that is easily explainable. But just looking into the crystal ball there are a number of other side issues that would need to be explained.
In this ALT world, did 815 land safely and now there are duplicate versions of these characters? I guess there would have to be, whether it landed safely or not. Can the losties never leave because of this? Would we just forget about what happened in the future of the original timeline? Would it be destroyed? Was that the purpose of creating the ALT, because the original line was being destroyed?
And perhaps most importantly, if creating the ALT, avoided some major destruction in the original timeline, then wouldn't the end of season 5 have basically resolved the primary issue of the show? Everything else falls underneath "saving the world" so I'm not sure what season 6 conflict would be able to compete with that. The world would already have been saved. Right?
But it's not impossible. I think there are tons of other questions to be answered that would take up enough time already, but it fits. The losties would go on living on the island, having saved the world, and we get the bonus of also seeing their ALT selves land safely in the real world.
The problem with that is, the ALT selves wouldn't have learned any of the life lessons our losties did. Sawyer would still be a grumpy revenge minded thug. Locke would be a loser. Jack would be a crybaby, Kate would be in jail, and so on and so forth. Again, it would make for a tough mess to clean up with so many other issues still left to handle.
But again, not entirely impossible.
Still, WHH, leaves us with a pretty easy cleanup. The major battle would be stopping The Man In Black and helping Jacob, who I think most might assume is not as dead as we think. The losties character arcs would continue as we know them without any bizarre jumps or needs for complex explanations. It would certainly suite both the die-hard and casual fan, who wouldn't be as inclined to try to piece together a large fragmented, multi-deminsional timeline.
But it sounds a little lame. Honestesly, I've loved WHH, but it if it is true, then I don't really know what the primary conflict is going to be. They hunt down The Man In Black? That's it? For 18 hours? Yeaaaah. There's got to be something else. Well, there's hours of flashbacks to the past events that still need some explanation, but still, 9 hours of hunting down the MIB? Not quite.
And so that's where I think I will go ahead and buy the ALT theory. It's just more interesting that way.
