“Two sides. One is black, and one is white.” We all know this quote by heart now. We know it’s significant, and quite possibly the summary of the entire series.
As of the season five finale we are beginning to understand the big picture. Esau (black) and Jacob (white) are shown as two separate entities who can’t see EYE to EYE. And that’s where my point comes to light. More than a few times we have directly seen what is perceived on the show. Eko saw depictions of Smokey that terrified him, while Locke said what he saw was “a bright WHITE light” and “beautiful.” I believe the island is a realm where two dimensions intersect, a gray zone. (Believe me this whole piece is not me bringing to light what has already been addressed before, but rather an amalgamation of existing theories.) I’ve noticed a pattern:
Esau (BLACK) (RIGHT) = evil, betrayal, murder
Jacob (WHITE) (LEFT) = good, kindness, victim
Locke holds up two backgammon pieces, the black one on the side of HIS RIGHT eye and the white one on the side of HIS LEFT. A cryptic Locke in Claire’s dream is shown with his RIGHT eye black and LEFT eye white. The scar on Locke’s right eye, to me, signifies that he no longer perceives with it. He perceives with his left now. This means something I believe ties the whole show together. The perception of each character coincides to who they are at that point in their lives. And so the pattern is revealed.
The very first scene of the pilot is Jack opening his RIGHT eye. We are shown one of the two planes of existence on the island. This is the Jack that can’t let go, the very trait that leads to his downward spiral. Once he wakes up after returning to the island in season five, we’re shown his LEFT eye opening. And what kind of person is he now? He’s completely opposite! He’s dropped the “I’m gonna fix you” persona and accepts destiny (faith) over probability (science).
Whenever we’re shown the extreme eye close-up of a character, a story arc follows showing whether their pivotal moment in life(flashback) is either positive or negative. Example, close-up of Locke’s left eye is followed by the flashback of him being a victim of failure. This is innocence. The close-up of Eko’s right eye is followed by the flashback of him killing others, and using his brother’s church as means of furthering his career as a drug trafficker. I’m hoping you all somewhat see where I’m coming from now.
Season five is where I finally saw the overlapping of these two dimensions. Sayid, who seemed to stop caring about his actions shoots a young Ben in cold blood. The wound is on the right side of Ben’s chest. However, when Sawyer and Kate bring him back to the barracks the wound is on his left side. What does this mean? Any evil act is seen from a RIGHT hand standpoint, and any good act or result of an evil act is seen by a LEFT hand standpoint. Take this concept of left and right, black and white perception and apply it to any of the examples seen on the show and I’ll guarantee you it always checks out. Gimme some of your own examples in your comments people, and try not to tear me apart too much haha.
