This is my first post.
I believe that the tension between MIB and Jacob is the age-old tension between the classical empiricist and the classical rationalist traditions of modern political theory and ideas about society.
Consider that Locke was the father of empiricism—I only believe what I can experience directly. Rousseau, Hobbes etc all contributed but from the rationalist perspective. We think therefore we are. Or strive for achieve the greatest good for the greatest number regardless of the means (Bentham et al). Add to that time travel, which I believe is just a ruse used by the producers, biblical and other ancient references and what we have is proof that human beings have been doing this same dance for eternity, and we have our Island and the characters. Imagine that MIB and Jacob and two deities attempting to create the perfect human state using representative slate of human archetypes types.
Modern renditions of this age old tension include the UN versus; terrorism etc (depicted the Dharmaville (Western nations and notions of society) and the others (terrorist).
How does this fit with Jack etc, I believe that Jack represents a perfect symmetry of both ideals. He is both science and of late faith. Through him Jacob has a variable ( recall Jack was not on his list) which changes the game; a person who is not so imbued in either camp (science and faith) that he is able end it once.

Locke – faith
Sayid – science
Rose – faith/science
Bernard - science
Kate –faith
Sawyer – science
Hurley – faith etc..
Regardless of whatever else is going on the island, the central theme/tension remains the same.
