Explanation of Alternate time-lines a theory:
By: Ricky,
This will be my attempt to explain alternate time-lines and how “LOST” could incorporate them into the show and still be able to be true to the Character Arcs and Story Arcs that have taken place thus far.
This is also an attempt to change the minds of the die-hard WHHer’s (you know who you are). Something that I’m not entirely sure can happen, but I will try nonetheless.
First I must say that this is all just possibilities, and not based on anything that the show has shown thus far, but stay with me and I’ll try to make it work out.
The Creators of “LOST” made this statement: “Trust us.” This is also in response to that.
First I must rant about the use of the word “RESET”, and the context in which it is being thrown around. I will use this term only to define the beginning of a new time-line, and not the reset of the entire show, as some would think. A lot of people think that the only other option besides WHH is a “RESET” which would make the entire series thus far for naught, but I will show you how this “RESET” will not happen, and how an Alternate time-line “Reset” most likely could happen.
OK let’s begin; We have seen in season five that time-travel is an element of the show “LOST” and that is what started the whole debate between WHH and ALT. We also saw that the Characters themselves think that they can change the past, by blowing up Jughead. They are both right and wrong about this. Confused? Let me explain.
In the scope of things there has been one consistent time-line all along with the exception of some of what Desmond did. We can all agree that he is special, and the reason for this is the Fail-Safe, and his new ability to mind jump into his past, and mind jump into his potential futures. But to re-iterate there has been only one linear time-line thus far.
So you may ask, how can that be true and there still be alternate time-lines happening? Well the answers lie in season 6.
I believe what we will see in season 6 will be a split in the time-line making two separate realities, or time-lines if you like.
What we have seen thus far in the show has been what I will call Time-line A. Every thing that happened on time-line A is the WHH for everything that we have seen from season 1.
To illustrate:
Time-line A = eternity past,-2004,-time-skips into 1974,-1977 at time of incident, and on through to the known future.
Time-line B = 1977 after incident/2004 Crash of 815, into un-known future.
Time-line A will split into two, making time-line B start in 2004 just after the crash of 815 because of the incident in 1977
So what we are seeing is that all the events leading to the Time-travel and to the incident are WHH in time-line A, and will happen. Time-line B will begin after 815 crashes for (in our perspective and in Jack and Co.’s perspective) the second time.
The part where they get to try and “Reset” the past is when they wake up on the Island after the crash of 815 version 2.0. The only people who will be special will be: Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Hurley, Jin, Sayid, Sun, and Locke.
Jack and Co. will have the knowledge gained from their past (Time-line A) on the Island and the benefit of knowing the Island’s past (1974- 2004 due to them being un-stuck in time)
Sun will have the benefit of knowing the Island’s potential future (2007 that we were shown in season 5[more on this later]), and the benefit of her past experience on the island.
Locke will have the benefit of knowing when and how he will die (in time-line A) and also the benefit of his past experience on the Island.
You may ask, why and how, will this happen, and what does this mean for season 6?
The answers:
Why? Because Jacob needs them to finish whatever he has started, this will be his counter-loophole.
How? Because the electromagnetism coupled with the Radiation will do exactly to Jack and Co., what was done to Desmond. They will get un-stuck in time and will either a) be able to wander the Island as ghostlike invisible presences, (whispers in any time on the island) and jump into their post crash bodies at will, or b) they will get slung into their post crash 2004 bodies and re-live events and mind jump as Desmond did.
What about Sun and Locke? Sun will just get transferred to her 2004 body and will be in two separate time-lines simultaneously (her time-line B self will remember the other timeline though) Lock will do the same, except in time-line A, he will die at Ben’s hand in 2007, in the other it remains to be seen.
You may ask why these particular people? The answer is Jacob’s touch. It acted as a constant to get them all back to 2004 with their past time-line memories intact.
What does this mean for Season 6? Well this means that there are a few possibilities. The first one is of course that the 77 losties will become the Whispers, and will jump at will into their past bodies, and Sun will know the potential future of the island (or the actual future in time-line A if it is not dissolved), Locke will be even more in tune with the Island this time around, and we will get to see all the past dead characters back alive and well on the Island in snippets, and while all this is going on there will still be an alternate future, (the one from season five), and we will get to see all of Richard’s flashbacks from this perspective, also I’m sure we will learn a lot more about Jacob and the “MIB”.
The other 2 options are; 1) that the Future we saw in season 5 will dissolve, and we will get to see a new future play out in the form of time-line B, or 2) the future we saw in season 5 is the future of time-line B, and we will see that the Losties will still leave the Island, and have to come back via 316 and Jacob will still die at the hands of Ben via Flocke. The other Losties that were in 1977 will appear on the island in the Temple, where they have been waiting agelessly since 77’. (To Sun and Ben’s surprise [since they know that they disappeared off of Flight 316])
To maybe make this “Reset” scenario a little easier to understand I will use Super Mario bros. (yes I’m showing my age here) As an analogy:
Lets say you play three quarters of the game only to get killed by one of the Koopas and you don’t have enough lives to keep going till the end. So you have to reset the game and start all over, well the next time that you play you will know all the dangers lying ahead, and all the warps, and shortcuts to take, and exactly what to do to get yourself safely and quickly back to the point of where you had to reset the last time. This time you will have all of your lives, and hopefully plenty of room for error in the last quarter of the game, so that you can more effectively beat king koopa and save the princess at the end.
This is how I view the “Reset” of time on lost; the first time through was time-line A, the second time through will be time-line B, this time the Losties will be better equipped to win the upcoming war and beat the MIB, and save the Island for Jacob in the end.
At some point during season 6 we will get to see some sort of way for the two time-lines to sync up, or we will see the dissolution of time-line A.
So I just opened up a can of worms, let’s see which fish bite!
What do you think?
Will the first bite be a WHH fish or an ALT fish?
Comment appreciated.
(I submitted this last week in the forum, but I wanted to originally submit it here so here it is.)
Enjoy.
