I started thinking about this theory while rewatching Season 2's "Dave", a Hurley centric episode.
In this episode, Dave, who was Hurleys imaginary friend in St Anna, appeared to him as a real person, and tried to convince him to jump to his death off a cliff, telling him that he was still in the hospital, and that nothing around him was real.
I'm not sure which part of the episode was the trigger, maybe just the fact that I was watching it for the first time with the knowledge that MIB is more than likely Dave on the island.
We know Jacob and MIB have opposing views of humanity. MIB says it always ends the same, Jacob says it only ends once.
What if when you die, your soul is "released" into a higher form of consciousness (what could be perceived as heaven or hell).
The quality of your soul will effect what course the "afterlife" takes for you.
Maybe MIB and Jacob are either aware of this afterlife, or possibly even come from it. They both know that as we exist now, as humans, we are not in our true form. When you die, you either go to, or possibly return this state of living (afterlife).
So what does this mean about MIB and Jacob's differences with each other?
Jacob believes in the goodness of humans, and believes there is a reason they exist in this fashion. He wants humanity to better itself so that when people DO die, their souls are pure as they enter the afterlife.
MIB wants the human charade to stop. After going through who knows how long living in his human shell, he is sick of it. He knows what awaits people after death, and believes they should just hurry up and die to get to their "real" consciousness in the afterlife.
When Dave is talking to Hurley on the cliff, what he is saying to him about jumping off the cliff to wake up to "real life" in St Anna, can be a direct parallel to how if Hurley died, his real consciousness, soul, or w/e you want to call it, will be awakened.
Many aspects of the show can fit into this overall idea. Perhaps there really will be an "end of the world" of somesort. Humanity's time may be on the clock, and Jacob wants to make sure that as many souls are as "pure" as possible before passing into the next life. MIB just wants it to hurry up and end.
Whispers really COULD be ghosts (people in the afterlife)
Alpert is from the afterlife. Its how he never ages and appears instantly out of the woods.
The black smoke does not judge people as being either good OR bad, but determines if the subject's soul has reached its furthest potential. If it has, good or bad, it deems it no longer necessary for the soul to exist in human form any longer. It has been around since humanity came into existence.
Jacob summoned Locke's soul back into his body after he died when he fell out of the window.
Walt and possibly Aaron are special because their souls are somehow connected to the afterlife, even though they are alive as humans.
I will stop because I could go on forever. Thanks.
