If the Losties were "never supposed to leave the island" then maybe that's why they ended up back in '77 after the Ajira crash. They should've stayed and time jumped along with Sawyer, Miles, Juliet and the rest. So when Ajira flight 316 crashed Jack, Kate and Hurley were brought to where they "should've been all along". Call it course correction if you must.
...meanwhile Sun, Ben and Locke's dead body were left in 2007 after the crash.
Sun wasn't moved to 1977 because had she stayed on the island, she would've died during her pregnancy. Ben and Locke weren't flashed to '77 because they should've been "unable to ever return to the island" after moving the Donkey Wheel.
