This is a very short theory, but I've just realized something interesting. I was over in the "answers" section and saw again commentary about the mystery from "the Pilot" and I'm not going into the conspiracy hidden clue rant, but I did realize something.
Black and White, good and evil, Jacob (white) MIB(...well till he's officially named he's MIB). So knowing this and that MIB can take forms, let's say Jacob can do the same...already see where I'm going? Jacob may have been Christian in the white tennis shoes. In fact, we all assume that every single manifestation has been MIB/Smoke Monster, but even though ppl are quick to throw out there that Jacob probably is still alive or will take some other form, did anyone really consider that Jacob's been playing the same game and manifesting himself just as much if not MORE then MIB/Smokie? I mean no one ever saw Jacob except presumably Richard or MIB, but that doesn't mean that Jacob doesn't see EVERYTHING ELSE. I look forward to the fact that when the final episode airs we'll have realized that MIB, Jacob, and the Monster will have technically played an even larger role then we ever realized because like how the producers said we probably saw the monster and didn't realize it aft! er Eko met it in season 2 (which turned out to be Yemi playing the same role that Alex did for Ben). Which would re-contextualize just about half of the weird visions, sightings, or zombies/manifestations that appear (maybe even the Hurley Bird could be one of them).
Kind of makes you wonder why Locke has had two different smoke monster encounters. The first time he sees the "eye of the island" and "a white light" and the second time he sees a "pillar of black smoke". Assuming that MIB is NOT the smoke monster, I wonder if BOTH of them can control it. This would also explain how it's behavior always changes in different situations. I don't know, it just seems worth noting that the shoes were WHITE and that the "Alice in Wonderland" themes of following the white rabbit, or going through the looking glass (with a bunny on it) seem to follow the fact that Jacob might be the representative of the unnatural and opposite of what humanity stands for, that is why MIB and him hate each other, cause Jacob can't accept the flaws of humanity, and has essentially used the Island as his own Wonderland/Skinner Box in some twisted experiment. Think about it!
