I had this thought a couple of days ago, and the more I think of it, the more it makes sense. Who is the only person who has been around in every time period we've seen in the show? Richard! Well, okay, perhaps some of the others have been around too, but they are all really just Log Carrying Guys (with apologies to Jay and Jack....) At any rate, I picture the first episode out of the gate to be Richard's back story on how he and the crewmates of the Black Rock were told to come to the island by Jacob. They get to the island, and Richard is transformed into Father Time. Richard is given the information that he'll need to be the guide to all of the leaders by Jacob. Richard then encounters the 1950's military, who want to test Jughead on his island. Next, the Dharma folk come in and set up camp, and a war breaks out, with the truce happening. Then the Purge, with Ben becoming the leader and bringing the r! est of Richard's Black Rock crew into the old Dharma barracks and living the life they want to live....until Oceanic Flight 815 gets torn in half above the island. Jacob of course has orchestrated all of this, but I am not sure just how or why yet. Locke becomes the leader of the others, with Richard as his guide. Then, after all of the time-shifting shenanigans, Richard leads "Locke" and Ben to Jacob so that they can kill him.
So, the theory isn't really about what the war is about, but it is about what the writer's device is going to be to tell the story of the last season. Think about it - we all love Richard, we're dying to see some kind of back story - he's been around for some 250 years....I can totally see it playing out this way. Can anyone else?
