Time does not exist on the island. The island only gives the illusion of time passing.
This is why Locke could predict the rain, why Richard doesn't seem to age, why the Ajira flight flipped from night to day, why people are able to jump through time. Locke could predict the rain because it is on a pattern and he was more in tune with the pattern than other people. Not because he is special, but because he believes that the island is special. Kind of like The Truman Show, everything is controlled.
Time travel is possible because there is no time to travel through. All things happening on the island take place outside of the dimension of time, therefore any one on the island can go to a spot (for lack of a better word) where "older" things are happening. The increased energy assists with this move, but it is not time travelling how we think of it where you go back and what you do from there changes things. It is like rewinding a cassete tape (anyone remember those?) to a certain spot, the music picks up at that point but when you come to the original spot you rewound from it will be the same music that was there before. Then when someone like Faraday leaves the island to go to 1977 Ann Arbor he reenters time in the past (as long as the coordinates are right). If the coordinates are wrong when you re-enter time then you become displaced in time and your brain melts (sort of).
I feel that the island being outside of the dimension of time can explain most of the crazy stuff happening on the coolest island since Gilligan's. So I'd love to hear other people expand on this, hopefully it inspires some good ideas.
Thanks
