How does one eliminate a threat like the smoke monster? My theory is that the smoke monster is allergic to peanut butter. Sound far fetched? Think of it this way:
At the start of the show, Claire is craving some peanut butter. Thus, peanut butter is set up as being important on the show.
Hurley eats Dharma peanut butter. Hurley has never been attacked by the smoke monster.
The first time Locke saw the monster ("I looked into the eye of the island" bit) he was safe because he had probably eaten peanut butter shortly before his hike.
Keamy and his men did not eat peanut butter before attacking Otherton. This is why they were attacked.
Peanuts can be found in a wide variety of foods, which is probably why many of the survivors are safe from the smoke monster.
Christian Shepard did not eat peanut butter on the island because he is dead. That is probably why the smoke monster could reanimate him.
Airplanes sometimes serve peanuts as on-board snacks. Also, some airplane food may contain peanut-based ingredients.
The smoke monster assumed Locke's identity ("Evil Locke"). As far as we know, Locke is not allergic to peanut butter. Jacob probably eats peanut butter. Thus, for the smoke monster to kill Jacob, he had to become Locke. Loophole.
For the Losties to defeat the smoke monster, they will need to bring lots of peanut butter to the island to use as weapons.
