Jacob is trying to prevent eternal return--he is trying to continue life on Earth instead of it starting all over and repeating itself

Ms. Hawking figured out the timeloop that was saving the world from ending by reading Daniel's journal and this is why she's been working so hard to preserve this timeloop. A big clue to this was her ouroborus pin that had the snake NOT eating its tail, which traditionally means eternal return--instead there's been a break in eternal return.
This new variation in the eternal return timeline that we are seeing is REALLY what happened from 1977-2008 but it's not ALWAYS what happened. Originally the world ended in 1977 and started over again, a rebirth and recurrence of time.
One reason to keep the world from ending would be for all of us to reach a "Higher Consciousness". Which we've seen the Losties show evidence of when they are on the island, such as Kate's mind's projection of the black horse. The goal of the Others is to achieve this.
The whispers are those from the timeline that currently should be active but has been prevented from existing. The War that is coming will be between Light and Dark. The Losties(and Jacob) versus the Whispers (and the Man in Black).
