Suppose The Others had a prophecy that there would be a couple who with an important destiny that will save the future. Richard has been waiting for this couple for a long time, but only has limited information on what he's looking for. For the female, he has some idea of what she looks like - maybe a picture or a statue. For the male, he knows that this person is supposed to bring someone close to him, who died off the island, back from the dead to a corporeal existance.
When he learns that young Ben has seen his mother on the island, and that his mother had died off the island, he believes he has found the man. Ben's vision is really a trick by the MIB, but Richard doesn't know this. Ben, meanwhile, is looking for a way to make a significant change and prove he is special, and thinks he was found the answer by modernizing The Others with technology.
At some point Juliet is identified as looking just like the woman, maybe in the 70s. Richard Alpert recruits Juliet and brings her to island on the pretext that she is to work on the pregancy issue, but she is really brought there because of the prophecy. In reality Richard knows there is little she can do with the pregnancy problems.
Ben believe he is special, so be becomes obsessed with Juliet, thinking it's their destiny to become a couple. Juliet, in her time with Others, finds out about this prophecy but rebels and runs off with Jack instead to join the Losties camp. Maybe she's marked by the Others to identify her significance. In reality, the person with the special destiny is Jack, and the Others don't know about this yet, and they don't know that dead Christian is walking around the island.
Things get messed up. Instead of ending up together, Jack gets off the island and Juliet ends up with Sawyer. When Jack gets back though, the two of them are instrumental in jointly setting off the bomb.
