"The Game of Time"
The main players would be: Jacob, as protagonist;
MIB (or "NOT ESAU"), as I like to call him, as the antagonist;
Richard, as the sort of Referee or Umpire;
Smokie is MIB's Go to guy, Ace in the hole, wild card, mulligan, do over, take your pick of terms but he is MIB's course corrector.
Desmond, would be Jacobs course corrector.
Now;
The way that I see Time flow in "Lost" is:
Quantum theory says that if you were to look at an atom, you would see the electron in any given particular space around the atom, at any given particular time. but that when it is not observed the electron is in all space, at all times.
This I use as an analogy of Time specifically (M.A.L.T.)
Another way to say this is that an electron acts as a wave, and a particle at the same time. Imagine the ocean spreading across infinity, and you have a single wave coming to shore. That is what an electron looks like if it is not being observed, but if you were to look at it, it would randomly pick a spot in space and time to appear. So you would not see a tsunami heading your way, you would see a drop of water hit you in the face.
Maybe that can explain the whole electron/Time analogy,
Ok with that being said,
Time is like a wave, or electron if you like, and is all possibilities at once, until it is observed, then it picks a defined timeline to navigate.
For example:
Time-line 1= Past as you know it, and the present as you currently see...(2004or7 depending)
Now travel to the past...
(1974 or 77 depending)
Ok now you are in time-line 2.
Time-line 2= The present which was once the past, but no longer is. It is now your new present.(ALT)

Ok, now that the old past is now your new present you have a choice, and that choice is, to perpetuate the time-line as it once was, or change it, because remember it is now your new present, and you can always change your present circumstances.

Now that you have made different decisions (ALT) in your new present, (1977) you can now live on into the new future (1977-2004 or 07) (ALT time-line or time-line 2 if you like) that is still the old past(1977-2004 or 07) but changed.
In my opinion "The Constant" Proves ALT or M.A.L.T. and "The Variable" eludes to it.

Timeline 1 = Desmond in 2004 on helicopter not knowing 2.342@11Hz...
Ok so his past consciousness displaces his present consciousness, a sorta different kind of time-travel...
Now, Timeline 2 = Des (1996) in new present 2004 he is totally dumbfounded, quick switchback to timeline 1 and so on...
Now, Des (1996) gets in touch with Dan (2004) through the "Different kind of time-travel",(ALT?) and Dan(2004), tells Des (1996), the 2.342@11Hz thing, and to meet him at Oxford when he switches back, (ALT for Des 1996)...
Ok, so Des (1996) goes to Oxford and meets Dan (1996) (ALT?), he then tells Dan (1996), the 2.342@11Hz thing and affects change for Dan (1996) (ALT for Dan 1996)...
Ok now Des (1996) has a problem, he might die from a brain hemorrhage, (that does not look like the right spelling but spell check says it is so anyway), and Dan (1996) tells him he has to get a "Constant". You know what happens next so I won't go into detail on that part...
Long story short, (I know too late right), Des (1996) gets in touch with his "Constant", and boom back to Des (2004) with new Past experiences that he did not have before (ALT for Des 2004)...
And likewise, Dan 2004 has new data that he didn't have from before, the "Desmond will be my constant" thing. (ALT for Dan 2004)
That is what I mean when I say "The Constant" proves ALT
That would make Jacob, and MIB, and Richard the Observers, and they have made this otherwise boring job into a game.
The Others, and the Losties, and the DHARMA guys, and any one else lucky or unlucky enough to come to this Island, are the players. MIB has Smokie to Course correct, Jacob has Desmond.
As an aside:
I believe that Eloise, was once Jacobs Course Corrector, but she got tired of doing it, and tried to pass it to her son hoping it would lead to him being saved, but it didn't and she gave up and passed the mantle to Desmond.
This is my theory on the Faraday situation;
He is personally stuck in a loop, from birth to death, that happened. I speculate that Ellie then took his journal to utilize it to try and change the future from her perspective, (77'-2007) but she will realize that no matter what, she will still kill Dan in 77',so she gives him a journal that has an inscription that he uses to record all his time-travel stuff.
Here's the kicker; maybe Eloise, in an alternate iteration wrote down some of the stuff he will learn in his future, in the journal from the second loop, so he can focus on other aspects of his science of choice, so it goes again this time there is exponentially more stuff in the journal as a result of the known loop.
See, Faraday is being told he is on a loop by Eloise in his journal, and he knows what happens, so he goes along knowing he will eventually be re-born to do it all over again, but every time he learns something new, and this time he used it to get Desmond to do his bidding with the 2.342@11Hz deal. That's one definition of ALT.
Hence the speech about the "River of Time", and the pebbles. So far, he has been tossing pebbles, but this time because he has learned everything that he needs to know about time-travel, he can get someone else to drop a boulder in the river,(Because he realizes that he cannot effect his own Fate but someone else can.) and possibly change it's course. That is what I mean when I say "The Variable" eludes to ALT.
That would also make Eloise "Destiny", you know, the "Fickle Bitch"
