My wife and I just re-watched “The Incident.” and I noticed something very interesting about the last scene. In particular, the exchange between Jacob and Ben, then MIB and Jacob.
From the outset, the majoriy of us have believed that MIB and Jacob are somehow opposites of one another. That they have conflicting purposes on the island. That Ben, who we all thought was a master manipulator, had somehow been played by either MIB or Jacob, to commit an act that was beyond his control.
If you rewatch the scene from the now infamous “What about YOU?,” line through the part where MIB kicks Jacob into the fire, you should notice that MIB appears to have expected a different outcome. Read their facial expressions, and tones in their voices. In this blog and on other sites, I’ve read about MIB seeming “shocked” about Jacob’s statement that “they’re coming.” But after watching the scene again, I honestly believe that MIB and Jacob – in conjunction - were expecting one particular result, but Jacob somehow sensed another, told MIB (“they’re coming”), and MIB realized that the plan had changed.
Jacob and MIB just appear to seem like they planned for one thing to happen, only to sense that another was about to potentially occur.
Again, you may need to watch this specific scene a couple times to see what I mean, but MIB and Jacob, appear to communicate as if they want to be on the same page, but weren’t expecting anyone “to come.”
