In the midst of working on a larger theory, I came up with the following: Could it be that Jacob is fate or predestination and MIB is free will? The instances in which “fate vs. free will” is the topic of conversation on Lost is well documented at Lostpedia so I will not reiterate here.
----------Jacob (Fate)
Jacob (Fate) is weaving, an analogy for creating the warp and weave of life. To summarize what I found on mythology surrounding “The 3 Fates”, one spun the thread of life, one measured the thread of life and one the cut of the thread of life and chose the manner of a person's death. We have seen Jacob interact with some of our Lostie’s lives resulting in various outcomes but in all cases manipulating what will occur.
As we know Jacob continues to bring people to the island, something that MIB is fighting against.
----------MIB (Free Will)
MIB (Free Will) comes out of nowhere. Although free will is discussed much in the show, MIB is not shown as an entity interacting with the Losties. One definition of Deus ex Machina (title of Season 1 Episode 19) is: In ancient Greek and Roman drama, a god introduced into a play to resolve the entanglements of the plot. Possible connection? (taken from this online dictionary)
In reference to Tabula Rasa ( title of Season 1 Episode 3), John Locke, the philosopher, uses the term tabula rasa to describe his theory that the mind of the individual was born "blank", and each individual is free to define the content of his or her character – (Wikepedia)
----------Stopping Fate?
MIB (Free Will) would like to prevent Jacob from continuing to bring people to the island to “come, destroy and corrupt” . MIB would like to get rid of Jacob (Fate) but he must follow the rule. The rule that does not allow the Others to kill each other or Ben to kill Widmore. The same rule that Widmore broke when Alex was killed. If MIB got someone else to kill Jacob, well then he would be giving into fate and manipulating someone’s life to kill Jacob and destroying their free will. He has to find a loophole. Which he does. That loophole is a whole study in it's self that I will try to address later. This is just a start. Or maybe someone else would like to give some thoughts.
