“Electromagnetism is defined as the combinations of alternating electric and magnetic fields created by accelerated charges that propagate out from these charges at the speed of light in the form of waves- electromagnetic waves or radiation.” Quote from Electromagnetic Waves: Origin and Theory, www.buzzle.com.
When new Dharma recruits came to the island they were all given injections. I reckon that this was because being on the island involves being exposed to a small amount of radiation. I think this is naturally occurring radiation which occurs because of the concentrated source of EM on the island. I think radiation leaks from the EM when the island is moved hence it is sort of naturally occurring and happening all the time. We know that if you come to the island on the wrong bearing that you get sick. We also know that when Ben used the FDW to move the island something went wrong and caused our Losties to skip through time. They also started to get sick, nosebleeds and eventual death likely from a brain aneurysm. This could also be caused by a greater leak of EM. So it seems likely to me that it’s all the same side effect radiation due to exposure to the EM. (Forget about Des and Dan for a minute I have a theory for how the EM affects them too due to their greater exposure t! o it.) The Others are most likely original inhabitants and have a natural immunity to the small levels of radiation usually on the island.
We have not seen the usual effects of setting off an H bomb on the island as a result of the incident. It has not been burnt by a fire blast and there is no sign of nuclear fallout so when the EM and radioactivity collide they must render each other inert. However there could be a small amount of radiation emitted as a result of this. At this time most of Dharma are off the island and after a while I believe the effects diminished in time. The Dharma personnel who were left on the island like Chang were exposed to this radiation, would get sick and maybe die. Radzinsky maybe felt responsible and that’s why he shot himself. Maybe he was exposed to the radiation and got so sick he killed himself before it got too bad. Kelvin was probably brought in later to help keeping the Swan going and keeping the EM controlled by inputting the numbers. Being in the Swan gives him protection from the radiation as well as injecting himself with the same drugs Dharma personnel were given wh! en they first came to the island. If he does venture outside he must wear the Hazmat suits.
So at some point Dharma would have repopulated the island when the radiation levels had dropped again. Kelvin was probably left down the hatch waiting to be relieved. There was no reason to tell him the sickness was gone as he was quite happy down there pressing the button Dharma could deal with that later. Maybe there wasn’t time between them coming back and them being gassed in the Purge. I’m a bit fuzzy on details here but I’m sure you good people can help me out with some idea to explain this little discrepancy.
The Others immunity is probably able to cope with the levels of radiation on the island that naturally occur but the incident increased the levels and started to affect them so that pregnant women and babies are affected. Remember Aaron needing the injections? I think he felt the affects more than the others due to his age. The adults (our Losties) would have been exposed to the small levels of radiation since they’ve been there but they haven’t been affected yet because the levels are low and they’ve not been there that long yet. Unlike the Dharma personnel who arrived in the 70’s who were planning to remain for many years, hence their injections.
Then Des turns the failsafe key and a similar reaction to the incident occurs. There is a build up of EM and how do we stop that? We detonate a bomb like Jughead! So that’s what the failsafe did. Of course there would then be another increase in levels of radiation on the island. Of course we have seen signs of the affects. Ben’s tumour and Jack’s appendicitis both of which occurred after the failsafe blast and are symptoms of more exposure to radiation!
