Ok, so this is kind of a loose idea, but it stands to reason on the surface.
at one point, i recall miles and the left behinders walking, and miles says something to the effect of 'i didnt sign up for this' after walking over a corpse. He also has at other points, walked near/over other corpses, during walks in the jungle. Miles is resonably intelligent, so it is IMO a safe assumption to say he may have pieced together the whole wheel turn/island skipping in time chain of events after the events of the incident.
earlier, i had mentioned i believe chang and miles make the DI tapes INTENTIONALLY to confuse the 815s when they get there, so they have no knowledge of their future selves in the past. but what if they also tried to create failsafes to prevent the incident from occuring, just to give it a shot? So they create the failsafe in the swan hatch as well. but what about the orchid? this is afterall, when everything 'started'. when we last see the orchid station, the tunnels below are under construction, and then sometime in the early 80s it has been completed and used for the 'rabbit duplication scenario'.
so what happened in between and after?
i suggest that while miles and chang where going to different stations, creating the orientation films, miles stumbled across more graves of the former island inhabitants.
i also suggest that he must have found a few ancient graves/skeletal remains, along with sailors from the black rock. With his ability to 'read the thoughts' of the dead people, he may have even found some sailor bodies NEAR THE ORCHID itself.
so, keeping those thoughts in mind, i believe miles pieced together a fantastical tale of a person(or maybe even a couple of people) from the ancient society who 'moved the island and caused a massive catclismic event' - perhaps the volcano eruption? I will agree with skeptics that the ancients knowing of the wheel is thin, so lets move to something more substative.
the black rock sailors MUST HAVE found the rope that was buried in the ground and built the well that john and sawyer found. When the time flash happened, it left the rope that the sailors found. in one podcast something along the lines of 'nothing buried on the island stays that way for a long time' so i would imagine this time flash is shortly before the black rock actually arriving. So the pirates dig up the well, and go into the cavern...there they find a strange wheel and decide, since it looks like a ship wheel, to try to salvage it. as the sailor(s) push/pull it from the wall, it turns. the ones touching it disapear. Their mates run away in a panic, and some probably die in the events that happen (potential time flashes here as well!).
so miles hears this story via the dead bodies on the island, and shares it with chang, who immediately recognizes the wheel in the tunnels of the now completed orchid station. So chang and miles create a SECRET passage down to the wheel itself, and chang, being a curious scientist, sends a polar bear to turn the wheel to see if it will vanish...and it DOES!
now, perhaps at this point there are more time flashes (explaining why horace would appear to john, have the nose bleed associated with time jumping, and then repeat) i add repeat, because i believe as this is happneing, both chang and miles are in the process of cooling the wheel w/ liquid nitrogen or something similar, to stop the flashes from continuing. they are, thankfully, successful.
now, the others are aware something just happened that SHOULD NOT. so richard (maybe having experianced this once already from the black rock days?) goes to widmore, who is at this point the leader (again, we are mid/late 80s-early 90s in this time frame) and widmore orders the purge (perhaps saying jacob told him, while it was in fact the adversary! who widmore followed - my opinion).
