I was thinking today about the WHH and TPCBC theories, and suddenly had a revelation. I think that the Losties in the seventies are, as a result of The Incident, "dislodged" from both time AND space, in such a way that only fragmented sounds from their present overlap into the running timeline of the last 5 seasons. I will explain why.
First, I have reached the conclusion that the sound we hear whenever Smokey appears is the "audio" of the incident. Listen closely, and I think it is unmistakably the sound of twisting metal, drilling, falling debris, et cetera.
Second, the whispers generally seemed to manifest themselves when one of the Losties, Rousseau, et cetera was alone. I believe the '77 Losties are stuck in this dislodged state, able to observe the events they lived through, but unable to communicate with their past (future) selves.
I think there will be two factions in season six. The ones who believe they should only observe, because whatever happened, happened, and the ones who think the past/future can be changed. I think this latter group (or possibly one dissenting individual) manifests itself as Smokey, because, after all, The Incident itself was a tangible effort to change what happened.
I believe we're going to see many of those "whispers" scenes replayed from the '77 Losties perspective, giving us a clue as to what they are trying to do.
Not sure yet how Ilana's group plays into this scenario, but she was the only non-Lostie we saw Jacob touch. Maybe this gives her the ability to communicate with the dislodged group.
