Some people see Jacob as good and The Man In Black (TMIB) as bad. I've already posted an extensive theory called Black and White makes Grey in which I suggest that neither side is good or bad. Instead, much like in a game of chess, one side has to be black and one side white.
Someone else posted a recent theory that TMIB draws power from the pocket of energy near the Donkey Wheel and Jacob draws power from the pocket of energy in the Swan (hatch). I like that theory and I’m going to use it in here. Now, if this is true and TMIB turns out to be bad, we would have to rename the Donkey (A&%) Wheel, the Bad A&% Wheel.
Now the serious part....
I’ve already stated that I think TMIB is an unwilling player. Jacob is forcing him to play by drawing pieces (people) to the island. In the past, TMIB has attempted to kill players (i.e. Danielle and co) or maybe even just refrain from playing. But, at the end of each game, black has either won or it has ended in a draw with no pieces left to play).
The biggest debate seems to be, Whatever Happened Happened (WHH) vs. The Past Can Be Changed (TPCBC).
The answer could be that both sides are partially correct.
The game between Jacob and TMIB is like a chess game (Locke liked Backgammon, but I think that was more because of how long it's been around...sorry Locke, chess is a better game). TMIB is putting 100% effort into winning this game. He has made a series of moves to cause changes in the past and, I think he was successful in doing so. Now, what TMIB didn't plan was for the Bomb to go off. In this way, I agree with the TPCBC crowd.
Now, imagine this: The A-bomb destroyed the wheel. That would also destroy the potential for time travel. Once this happened, the past could not be changed. However, it would also create a paradox because, if the wheel was destroyed in the seventies, both Ben and Locke would not have been able to turn the wheel in the future.
But that’s not what happened…
At the end of The Incident, the screen flashes white as an explosion is heard. This struck me as odd, but now I think I get it. The bomb NEVER went off in the 70’s. The bomb and the people in the immediate vicinity flashed through time to the present (2007). A fraction of a second later, the bomb exploded. I think this is why it took so much effort to set the bomb off—the island was resisting. But Juliette’s will proved too strong and the island had to use another form of course correction—time travel.
There is one alternative which would explain the flash through time: someone will have turned the wheel. This could be cool. A one episode storyline with one of the characters traveling back in time and turning the wheel at the exact right moment—someone enlisted by Jacob. Maybe Desmond. Maybe Daniel’s mom. Who knows? Anyone, either by island forces or someone’s hand, the there is a time flash.
If there had been one more scene, we would have seen Jack wake up in the jungle (the wheel can move one’s position as well as through time). Jack would have opened his eyes and seen a cloud of smoke, but it would not have been the smoke monster; it would have been a mushroom cloud as the wheel was destroyed. This scenario also explains how the 70s crew get back to the present (without wasting precious episodes to do it). Maybe Juliette will even survive; the island’s healing properties taking effect. Her first scene could be continuing her motion of smashing the rock into the bomb. But the bomb will be gone and she will smash the rock into the ground. Kind of cool.
Back at the statue, TMIB (now in the form of Evil Locke) and company will see the same mushroom cloud. Those off island (Widmore, etc.) will be able to “see” the island. The rules will TRULY have changed. No more hiding the island. No more time travel. No more correcting the past. One time line. The Past Can Be Changed will now be WHH. In this way, the WHH crowd is correct.
Adam and Eve will be Bernard and Rose. They were not close enough to the A-bomb to flash. They will remain in the 70s and will be symbolic (black and white couple, the black and white stones, yang and yin, harmony, etc.).
For Season 6, it’s game on. No do-overs.
