It begins with Jack's eye opening, appropriately, out in the jungle, alone at night - seconds after Jacob's death in present day. Dazed and stumbling, still wearing his Workman jumpsuit. Once his vision focuses, he sees in the trees and ferns, his father, in suit and white tennis shoes. Stunned he watches as Christian walks off, then Jack races after him. Stopping, losing track of him, then there, to his right, more running, stopping again. Now to his left where his father disappears in the shadows of the jungle and Jack pursues once more, but trips and careens down a hill, much like in White Rabbit, landing in a clearing, maybe on an old Dharma road. He looks up, strewn on his back, breathing hard. An upside-down face looms into his view. It's the bald, scarred visage of John Locke - the REAL John Locke. Jack springs to his feet, bewildered. "Am I dead?" he asks John. "No," John replies, "But, as you know, I am,! Jack." "How are you here?" Jack asks. "It's doesn't matter how, all that matters is we have work to do." Cut to LOST.
As I said, this is the one true Locke. Yes, still dead, but brought back in another form, not by Smokey or the Dark Man, to fulfill incomplete business. And for throughout the season, Locke serves as a kind of Obi-Wan spirit for Jack, who only he can see and hear - perhaps Miles and Hurley too. Locke is not a pawn, but a teacher of sorts, like his wise man role in season 1 again. And he will achieve his Purpose through helping Jack find his way, and Jack will achieve his Purpose through Locke's help. Faith and science united to ensure the right side wins the war.
