S6 Speculation
In 1977 Eloise Hawking turns the FDW to move the island and protect her people from Jack’s bomb. This is how and why Eloise leaves the island, and probably the beginning of the end for her and Widmore. While I believe Widmore is Daniel’s father, it is possible he’s not, why is Daniel’s last name Faraday anyway, writer’s misdirection? Maybe? I believe Penny is Widmore’s daughter with the outsider that helped Ben kick Charles off the island, and why Charles was leaving the island too – to see Ellie/Daniel and Mistress/Penny.
This could also be a partial explanation for the fade to white, a white flash time jump and for only the Losties, because as Richard told Locke, we “the others” didn’t go anywhere, you did John. So, Hawking’s people would be okay, maybe safe at the temple or underground – protected from the explosion. The other part of the fade to white – the bomb exploding, but not doing the damage Daniel thought, hence the incident, the concrete, the hatch, the button, etc…
If you’ll rewatch the S2 episodes of Locke, Kate and Jack entering the hatch, their hatch door is a distance from the concrete magnet wall, which seems to have a lot of similar debris that fell down at the end of S5, and is a whole tunnel width over from the same spot. Maybe that spot is The Incident/Jack’s bomb, and Dharma just moved the digging/building over and around that spot.
Since Widmore knows where the island exit dumps you after the turning of the FDW, but did not himself leave that way, he could only know this from someone who did (i.e. Hawking), by witnessing her turn the FDW in 1977, and her telling him where she landed at some point after he too was off island.
When and why she told Widmore is unclear, but I speculate it has something to do with Faraday’s notebook, or at least Faraday in general. Mainly because Widmore does not have his super duper security system at the Tunisia exit dump when Ben lands there in 2004 or 2005 (I can’t remember exactly), but it’s up and running 3 years later when Locke arrives.
Hawking the great coarse corrector has known everything that should/needed to happen up until she sends the O6 back to the island – where she first meets them, beginning her journey to make WHH. That is why, at the hospital she says “This the first time, in a very long time, that I don’t know what is going to happen next”, which may only be partially true since she tells Desmond that the island isn’t done with him yet.
Similarly, how does Ben know where the FDW is, what is does and where he’ll end up? Ben knows because he saw Hawking do it, or heard about it anyway, back in 1977. How did Ben know he’d land in Tunisia? Hawking probably told him, because WHH, but before she told Widmore. In one of the extras, either the DVD or ABC missing pieces there is a deleted scene of Ben landing in the desert and digging something up nearby, (similar to digging up the mirror and binocular or taking something out of the hotel vent) seeming to know where he’d end up.
This is also probably how Ben tricked Widmore off the island, by falsely claiming that Jacob said you can’t come back to the island if you turn the FDW (after all Ben IS back on the island and we know Ben never talked with Jacob and that Ben didn’t agree with Widmore’s leadership i.e. saving Alex). Thus by saying Hawking couldn’t come back, it forced Widmore to leave the island, often and secretly, which also led to another child (Penny) with an unknown outsider – Ben wouldn’t consider Ellie an outsider.
This could also be why it seems both Ben and Hawking, at virtually the same time, BOTH don’t know what’s going to happen next (for the first time in a very long time;-) Maybe the former leader of the other’s, Ellie, at some point clued in the next leader of the other’s, Ben, all her coarse correcting knowledge. Both of them knowing WHH up until the S5 finale… It only ends once… Lost will only end once… what a great “literal” metaphor.
This could also be why Desmond is special. When he turned the fail safe key, (an interpretation of the FDW), the island got the time travelling purple sky, but the island didn’t go anywhere, Desmond did – the exact opposite of what happen with the FDW and Locke. But Desmond HAD to come back, opposite of the FDW you can’t come back (even thought that seems to be Ben’s lie – ya never know – Ben came back, and he obviously HAD to come back, even though he didn’t know it was to kill Jacob).
I know, I got a headache too, but… Thanks for reading, first time posting….
Last thought, does anyone else see the similarities between S5 and Memnock by Anne Rice, particularly the finale? Or is it just me… maybe I’ll draw parallels some other time.
