First off, what fascinating topics to discuss. And we’ve been doing quite a lot of that lately. It’s no wonder, since Darlton have presented us with so many unknowns. But before I go any further on these topics I want to define these commonly used words to hopefully make sense in the discussion.
So here are Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary’s definitions:
Magic: 1 a: The use of means (as charms or spells) believed to have supernatural power over natural forces b: magic rites or incantations. 2 a: an extraordinary power or influence seemingly from a supernatural source b: something that seems to cast a spell 3: the art of producing illusions by sleight of hand
Magic adj. 1 of or relating to magic 2 a: having seemingly supernatural qualities or powers b) giving a feeling of enchantment
There’s more relating to magicking and other forms of the word I haven’t included.
Science Fiction: Fiction dealing principally with the impact of actual or imagined science upon society or individuals: broadly: literary fantasy including a scientific factor as an essential orienting component.
Mystery: a: a religious truth that man can know by revelation alone and cannot fully understand (I left out various religious references here). 2 a: Something not understood or beyond understanding, enigma, b: private secret c: secret specialized practices. d: a piece of fiction dealing with the solution of a mysterious crime. 3: Profound inexplicable or secretive quality or character.
I think these definitions apply to Lost in various forms. Here are a few examples. Time travel: Scifi. Jacob and MIB: at this point I think they incorporate elements of all 3 words. Smoke Monster, again all 3. John’s walking and reincarnation: again all 3. The list goes on, but, hopefully my point is made.
So I think these themes of magic, scifi and mystery are all woven into Lost in many different ways. In addition to these words or terms, there are countless references to books, religions, philosophy, comic books and social issues etc. that go beyond what we normally see on t.v. That’s what makes it so fascinating and leads us to endless discussions on websites like this. It’s why I love this show so much.
I believe a lot of our questions will be answered either through scifi or real explanations. However I think there will always be some elements of mystery and magic on the show.
Remember, Jack’s grandfather was a magician.
