I know some of you have hinted on the theory that the island is the Lost city of Atlantis but there may be a lot of truth into the theory. “To many, however, Atlantis is not just a lost continent. It is a lost world. The Atlanteans were extraterrestrials who destroyed themselves with nuclear bombs or some other extraordinarily powerful device. Atlantis was a place of advanced civilization and technology. Lewis Spence, a Scottish mythologist who used "inspiration" instead of scientific methods, attributes Cro-Magnon cave paintings in Europe to displaced Atlanteans. Helena Blavatsky and the theosophists of the late 19th century invented the notion that the Atlanteans had invented airplanes and explosives and grew extraterrestrial wheat. The theosophists also invented Mu, a lost continent in the Pacific Ocean. Psychic healer Edgar Cayce claimed to have had psychic knowledge of Atlantean texts which assisted him in! his prophecies and cures. J.Z. Knight claims that Ramtha, the spirit she channels, is from Atlantis”. According to Cayce revelations the Atlanteans were able to harness great energy from the island and this energy led to crystals that gave them great knowledge. Also that knowledge was given to ancient societies like the Egyptians who were able to build grand pyramids.

Richard is Egyptian who has become their gatekeeper but he can be killed by mankind.
Jacob’s duty is as a warden over MIB/aka Smoky who was responsible for the downfall of the Atlanteans. MIB has been exiled but is always looking for a chance to escape. Jacob may be in a long line of wardens and his time is ending when he completes the tapestry. It signals someone else as a “candidate” to oversee MIB. MIB also can use humans to manipulate his escape. When Jacobs is killed and states “they are coming” he is referring the new warden and a group prison guards. Jacob has the ability to leave the island to set the next round of overseers.
MIB cannot leave the island but he can take human form to influence outsiders to come to the island. Widmore may have met MIB and has been working with him secretly on the outside and when the Others find out he was banished.
Some interesting insight as to the placement of the island. We know it is always moving making it difficult to locate. The island also has an electromagnetic force which can creates havoc on modern instruments this same force was also possessed by The Lost City of Atlantis according to some scholars. When approached through the air one experiences a storm cloud and must pass through. (In 1945 a group of Navy pilots set off from Florida on a routine mission in the Atlantic according to their last transmissions the pilots reported an lightening storm and their compass as well as instrument panels were malfunctioning. They disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle and never were seen again. Even the Navy rescue plane sent on a rescue mission also reported there onboard instruments were also malfunctioning the pilot simply head west directly into the sun and eventually landed safely back on base).
What we will see in the final season is elders of the island who must keep MIB locked up who will emerge as the next warden. (Frank L.?) And with no warden MIB is now loose to use his skills to destroy mankind like he almost did with the Lost City of Atlantis. Our losties will meet the Atlanteans and they will be given directions how to harness MIB and his destruction.
