Hey all I’m currently studying Ancient History and Philosophy and thought I’d share some cool ideas with you. Please feel free to steal anything for your own theory and hope you enjoy it :)
Ok I’m sure you’re all familiar with Locke’s Backgammon speech by now……
“Two sides, one is light, one is dark”.
I believe that both men at the beginning of “the Incident” are leaders of the Island Perhaps some form of Gods or Demigods that manipulate certain bodies and are just spirit/souls/energy. I believe Jacob to be “good” … (I’m using this word in simple terms as I don’t want to get all theoretical about what good and bad really is)… and Enemy to be Bad… Also for what it is worth I believe Richard is Grey, back to that later though.
I believe Jacob to be good , I think it’s Jacob’s job to guide the living, and the “enemy’s” job is to guide the dead, thus Jacob walks in the “Land of the living” as John Quoted to Ben “Whatever Happened, Happened (see last chapter for more info on this statement) and “enemy” resides in the “Underworld” (as quoted in hieroglyphs on the hatch timer). Both realms being exactly the same Place but Jacob walking with the Living and Enemy walking amongst the dead, this explains what I think the whispers, they are voices from the underworld bleeding through.
I believe the Upper world and the underworld to both be on the island at the same time and the same place, but maybe just on different planes/dimensions.
I believe that Jacob and “enemy” have no physical form, they use certain “special” dead bodies left unburied as Vessels for their Energy/souls/sprit, I would guess the characters we saw at the start of the incident is not their true appearance/form.
“Enemy” can only visit the land of the living if in possession of a special fresh corpse, this would explain the “hostiles” laws on burying the dead (as Amy states in LeFleur). However, I think that something must of happened that stopped allowing “enemy” to visit. I believe this to be the incident.
When Juliet detonated the H-Bomb it was conveniently nestled upon a pocket of exotic matter made from copious amounts of electromagnetism.
This next line will most likely sound ridiculous at first but hear me out;
When the bomb detonated it blew the entrance to the underworld open (the matter being the Entrance/Gateway/Portal/Anomaly)
I believe this allowed Enemy to enter the land of the living at will in his true form. eventually he was trapped and imprisoned in Horace’s cabin by the circle of ash meanwhile Radzinsky was able to find a way to contain the Gateway/anomaly with the numbers. I believe Enemy’s true form was seen in “Man Behind the Curtain” and at some point some one disturbed the ash keeping him prisoner (maybe Locke?) that allowed him to escape.
I believe the white and black philosophy to be about many ancient beliefs and opposites such as;
Day and night, Good and evil, Life and death.
This would explain why enemy could be the monster, they both represent death, the monster could also be like Charon (the ferryman of Hades) and has the capability to take people to the underworld.
There are many references to this idea;
Locke talks in “Pilot part 2” about Mesopotamia in Babylonian times, who believed in the underworld. The Lamassu is famous for being a guardian of the portal to the underworld. Jacob’s Tapestry features the eye of Horus in between two wings of a Lamassu.
Penelope waited patiently and faithfully for Odysseus to arrive back from the underworld in Homer’s Odyssey just as Penny does for Desmond.
The Egyptians believed in an underworld as a part of their afterlife and such spirits as Apep and God‘s of death and mummification i.e Anubis. (both are displayed on the stone fragment above the Monsters home in Dead is Dead)
Although ancient Egyptians had a very strong sense of black and white philosophy it was differed from other cultures because they looked beyond Black and White and used Grey as their philosophy. The idea being that good cannot exist without evil, days can’t exist without nights… This is where I think Richard Alpert comes in. As far as I know we have never seen Richard dressed in Black or White attire, He always seems to be neutrally dressed and that is his position, he acts as a link between Enemy and Jacob, he takes advice from both sides and tries to keep things neutral. Another Richard Alpert observation that threw me off a bit was his quote in “the incident” where he states “I’m this way because of Jacob” I at first assumed that this meant he is on Jacob’s side, but after some pondering it’s credible that he could only be given eternal or extended life by Jacob because Jacob represents life and resides in the land of the living.
The monster has also been referred to as Cerberus, for those of you who are unsure, Cerberus was the three headed hound guardian of the underworld (Hades) In Greek mythology. It has been stated in previous theories that as the monster approaches Juliet behind the sonic fence in “Left Behind” it splits into three different evading sections that looks like three heads with faces, be sure to check it out.
Another interesting fact is the heaven and hell theory, when we see Jacob eating his dinner he is in daylight and when Enemy (Flocke) kills him it is night. The heaven and hell idea is that Jacob stares in to the fire when he realises Enemy has returned, obviously fire equals Hell, and Enemy has great pleasure in setting fire to Jacob and watching him burn with an evil half-smile.
Finally I’d like to add one more interesting idea, in the casting call for “the incident” Enemy is listed as being called Samuel. Interestingly in the Book of Samuel (Book of Kings), Samuel appears before Saul much as the dead seem to appear to characters on the island. Saul calls on the witch of Endor to help him bring Samuel back from the underworld for advice. This is referred to as Samuel leaving the underworld and returning to “Land of the Living” as John quoted to the waking Ben in WHH.
Anyways peace be with you and thanks taking the time out to read this.
