Alright, no clue if this has been specifically or partially discussed as I haven't read everything on this site, but I'm just free flowing a bit here.
The idea of religion has come up quite often with the ideas that Jacob and TMIB are angels or gods or demigods or whatever. These theories really hit me well. Very intriguing.
This is more of a hmmmmm... then a theory. I doubt this will be the case but a comparison is definitely possible.
We are trying to fit the world of Lost and it's characters into some pre-defined box or set of boxes. I think we can just draw comparisons and I truly *hope* that is all we can do. I really want to see the Lost team take this story in their own direction...but with that said, my comparison is below:
The good vs. evil concepts can be taken up to the highest level in common relgion... the White being God and the Black being The Devil. The ever running battle between good and evil. God believing in the best for humans and the Devil beliving the worse for them. There is no doubting this basic comparison between God/Devil and Jacob/TMIB.
Taking the comparison another step...Jacob showed up in the lives of several of the losties and touched them. (Already comparisons to the touching with religion done in other theories) Folks have questioned whether Jacob is good when he obviously *saves* Sayid while letting his wife get smooshed by a car. This is so totally God's gig right there. We constantly question why God takes one life and not another...why one person is chosen and another is not. He lets us go about our daily lives while trying to prepare for ordeals in the future or tasks which he may ask us to do. This was really the case in the old testament.
I have not had the time to really work this out completely but here are some other thoughts that make good comparisons.
Jacob fully believes in free will, or at least claims that, and at least appears to, for humans. At the same time he does not feel the need to explain his actions or motives...ie Ben and the final scene with Ben apparently killing Jacob.
Alright, I'm going to stop there. I'm not intending to say that Jacob represents or is God. I'm just saying that when you create a fictional story to tell you draw on what you know and mix that with your imagination. There is a ton of historical information being used to tell this story and that is mixed in with fictional information. I just found that the more I thought about the story in regards to religion, the more I could compare it to the ultimate biblical story of God vs the Devil.
heh...you can even go down to the idea of demonic posession with TMIB posessing dead bodies. (if it does turn out to be the case)
