While we are all inclined to think that our beloved John Locke is dead and what we were treated to in the last half of the season was an impeccable copy manipulated by the MIB, it has occurred to me that the John Locke we have watched (since the death of John Locke at the hands of Ben) is still John Locke.
Here's what we know... Locke left the island, arrived in the Tunisia desert and was put back on the path by Widmore to get the gang back together to return to the island. Along the way Locke is apparently killed by Ben, at which point Ben drags his body back to the island where we see it fall out of the cargo hold in the finale.
BUT, what if our 1977 Losties alter the timeline of the future where Locke never left the island or even arrived on the island in the plane crash?
And like Desmond, Locke has memories of the altered past timeline.
The Locke we all think to be a manipulated corpse or puppet of the MIB is actually John Locke 2.0. A version that has spent more time on the island, lived through the time flashes and knows about his 'demise' off island would be a very powerful individual.
The thought here is that Locke 2.0 never left the island, but if he never left the island, how could he die... thus the paradox and WHY his body had to be brought back to the island. By bringing his body back, Locke could then appear to others because the paradox was solved by having him back (even dead) on the island, thus his past self could exist and appear to others.
We've already seen with Miles that one can co-exist with past and future versions of one's self without causing problems. So it seems to me that past versions of one's self can only appear to others on the island if there future (albeit dead) body is on the island. Perhaps Christian Sheppard is merely a past version of himself able to exist on the island due to his body being on the island.
And perhaps only those who die off island can return.
Perhaps what we will see in season six is the course correction of these two time lines and the paradoxes being resolved. How can John Locke still live when he left the island and was killed? Because our 1977's Losties changed what occurred.
Or even maybe created an alternate time line in which Locke never returned to the mainland... thus existing on the island as a whisper voice... UNTIL his body was brought back.
Since the island clearly is capable of movement, and time travel is plausible, it stands to reason that perhaps the whispers are those who have died on the island, but their past selves have leaped through time to the future after there demise. But if they died on the island then their body cannot leap with them... hence just voices.
However, if they die off island, but have lived on the island beforehand... then it stands to reason that they could plausibly leap into the future where they've already died... and as long as their body is on the island, we (the observer) can see and interact with them. The kicker here is that though we can observe and interact with them... they are no longer capable of affecting our world directly. Others must do their bidding as they are... probationary players on this stage.
Locke cannot do anything; he must get Ben to do it as he is nothing more than a past version of himself with all the knowledge but incapable of interacting on the most simple level.
