I posted this as a reply in another thread, but thought it worthy to have its own so here 'goes. I have been mulling over whether or not he is X. First, I subscribed to the theory that he was since the apparition of Alex told Ben to follow Locke, while "Locke" was pulling what could be construed as a "Clark Kent," where he disappeared to take on the form of Alex.
Now, I've been thinking that it would just be way cooler if the Smoke was its own entity. It has been one of, if not the biggest mystery, and I think it would be more satisfying this way. So the clues? The writers have said that Smokey is one of those show-ending mysteries. I also thought of the mural of Anubis with his hand out to Smokey. This got me thinking of X possibly being in league with the BSM, rather than the two being one and the same. However, one could still argue that Smokey is X's purest form and the mural was that of him and Jacob (as Anubis, or Anubis himself even).
But there's still not enough evidence to fully deny them being seperate entities, or the same for that matter. Bah, I don't know. If they're not the same, maybe Smokey lets certain people control its movements/actions and lets them "tag along," so to speak, with a certain degree of control, if it believes their intentions to be what's best for the island. Or, better yet, it grants them the ability to be part of itself and vice versa (like "the sickness" that happened to Rousseau's team once out of the Temple-wall-basement), kind of like a symbiosis type deal.
Maybe the Smoke can be swayed. I'd just like to still have Smokey be a mystery; one that, when revealed, will leave us with our jaws on the floor, but that's just me. Again, this hiatus suckssss
I'm going to ramble some more here since I'm starting to like where this is going. There has been a lot of talk about the concept of the "Omega Point," stemming from the book Jacob was reading. What if that's what Smokey is? A collective consciousness that consists of certain people with X, at this point in time, having the most influence over it? It would be cool considering how much the writers tell us the show is about the characters. Maybe they'll someday reach this higher consciousness, kick X out of it, and turn black to white? Ok now I've really gone off my rocker, lol, just had to follow the train of thought ya know.
