This is very simple. As we all know Jacob himself, in the body form of the blonde man, went into the world and interacted with each of the O6 well before they made it to the island the first time. The backstory in the Season 5 Finale makes it clear to show Jacob interacting with, and touching each of the O6 with the exception of Aaron... that would be Kate, Jack, Hurley, Sayid, Sun. Now, we also get to see him interact with a young Sawyer as well as Illana, but more on that later. We see Jacob interacting with nobody else in the season 5 finale.
So it's safe to say, that every single event that led up to Ajira 316's flight, everything, the freighter, the chopper, Keamy, all of the events leading to them "going back" to the island was predestined by Jacob. That's just a neat thing to know. If The Man in Black (TMIB) was concocting a plan to bring John Locke to the island to kill Jacob, it just seems that Jacob has an alterior plan set in place.
TMIB's events seem to work on the "Locke" side of the story. TMIB is the one who believes that it always ends the same, you can't change the course of humanity... destiny. He is a strong defender of destiny. And people who are in the "destiny" boat are Locke, Hawking, Kelvin, Desmond, Charlie, Daniel (at first). The characters in the "destiny" boat have lived lives where they were always told they were special, and in life they served a greater purpose, to boost their confidence and ease them into believing that things always served a purpose. TMIB's events he wanted, were to allow time travel to occur, so Daniel could start the events leading to the incident in '77, Swan numbers being entered, Hawking teaching Desmond about his destiny to push buttons, and ultimately crashing 815.
Jacob's events seem to work on what I always called the "Jack" side, but since season 4 I now call it the 06 side now. We see Jack being a strong opposing force of John Locke throughout the show. A strong naysayer of destiny at first. As Jacob's influence has led the O6 down a path in the real world of nothing but despair, sadness, and heartache, opposite of serving any greater purpose. It's just like if you beat someone down enough, they start to deny a greater purpose, a greater God, life is just chaotic and random.
Jack has father issues and inadequacy issues with being a surgeon, and then his failed marriage, attempted suicide
Kate murdered her stepfather, stepdaddy issues, and has mother issues, on the run from the law.
Hurley believes he's cursed, has daddy issues leaving family, his house burns down, work blows up,
Sun is also has daddy issues with her mafiaesque father, commits adultury
Sayid the only one we have a minimal backstory on, but we know he has a pushy and controlling father, Sayid kills the chicken, and seems his daddy started his path as a cold-hearted killer early on.
Aaron, well having no daddy in his life obviously will be a daddy issue for him. He had Jack as a pseudo "step daddy" for a while, but that ended.
It makes you think that if the way to kill someone's belief in faith, in destiny, you destroy their family life. Jacob wants people to believe in free will, opposite of TMIB. So Jacob, the good guy, actually acts as a destroyer, and TMIB, the bad guy actually acts as a protector of people as they are being manipulated. Which makes sense, it's just like Job in the Bible, the more despair someone faces, the BETTER they rise up at the end as a faithful follower. Jacob HAD to give Jack such a hard life, just so that he can at first deny destiny, and then discover it later on as a light bulb goes off.
Now onto the other person who Jacob touched, Sawyer, who's not part of the O6... however, as you can see Sawyer had a change of heart mid-show from a heartless badboy into a hero with a heart of Gold. Obviously Jacob's goodness is starting to shine through. Everyone Jacob touched seems to have the ability to be faced with extremely difficult choices, and end up shining through with a good choice:
Jack: changes his mind about faith and destiny, on his own. Returns to the island because of a word about his daddy from Locke. He believes so strongly in his purpose now, he's willing to risk dying for it via nuclear bomb.
Kate: changes her mind and settles down, raising a family. She comes back to the island to give it all up, to find Aaron's mother.
Sun: forgives Jin, renews her love for him, engages on a heroine's quest to find him. Buys her daddy's company.
Hurley: To me has always been like an angel on the show. He's the anchor for goodness, Hurley never makes a selfish decision. I could list a million things here.
Sayid: Accepts death as part of his sacrifice in following Jack. Believes he's on the island to serve a purpose.
It's just like how Ben always manipulated people to want to make their actions "Their choice" instead of manipulate them to do it. He wants them to "WANT" to do it. This is Jacob's method... it's making people have the desire to want to make the right choices. And as we can see, it's all over this show and in the O6.
I believe that each of the O6 now, actually ARE the embodiments of Jacob in some way, whether physical, or just spiritual. Jacob knew that the only way to "prove TMIB wrong" was to die himself. Amazing! He had to sacrifice himself so that TMIB would finally believe. Just like Jesus, and other historical religious figures. Everything leading up to this moment, was Jacob's plan all along, to die. TMIB believes he's killing Jacob and gaining the upper hand, but he's really just part of Jacob's plan altogether. Just like Judas was still part of Jesus's plan.
And in Jacob dying, what is gained from this will be what Season 6 is about. It's all about the people. TPTB on the show, have always said the Island is like the Force in Star Wars. You will never know WHAT it is, just that it's there, and that it's magical and unexplainable. It's always been about, and always will be about, the people. The people, like the O6, are now the embodied representatives of Jacob, his apostles. Jesus died, and his goodness lives on through people carrying the story throughout history. Jacob, does the same, through the O6, they will rise up, and carry on the force of Good, and carry on their goodness back to the world.
In the Biblical story for instance, before Jesus was killed, God and Satan were very present on the Earth, but in that moment of his death, Jesus goes to Heaven and Satan banished completely to hell. They are therefore just able to subtly affect humanity from afar, no more direct conflict. They live on only as legends, religions, stories to tell. The only way to win the game, is to END it. Jesus had to die, Jacob had to die. No longer are they going to walk the earth and touch people with their hands, only their spirit will live on. The game itself always ends the same when you play it, but "It only ends once" is when you take the Backgammon board, and smash it to pieces and just stop the game altogether, for both parties. You leave the faith and free-will and choices in the hands of the people, and you let them live their lives without a two-sided light/dark manipulation.
