Just some speculation over the events of the past seasons to explain the war between Esau and Jacob and how the survivors are just pawns on the chessboard, being played and set up like pieces in a game. This speculation is after watching all episodes of season 5, so if you havent dont read on....
in episode ‘Deus Ex Machina’
Jacob didn’t want Locke to open hatch and get distracted from true mission of he and the survivors uniting as Jacob's army against Esau
Tried taking his gift of walking away
Locke opened it anyway
in episode 'Exodus'
Esau, maybe realising Locke's importance, tries dragging him down a hole, as the monster, near the temple to kill him before Jacob can use him
in the episode ‘?’
Jacob contacted Eko to help him take Locke to the Pearl and lose his faith in hatch Eko took over in the hatch
in episode ‘Further Instructions’
Locke and Desmond destroyed hatch
Jacob took Locke’s speech and contacted him in dream to bring family together meaning save Jack et all - his next apostles! as he is no longer distracted by the hatch
in episode ‘The Cost of Living’
Esau contacts Eko to try and get him to be his loophole
Eko decided he was a good man
Esau - in the form of the smoke monster - killed him
In episode ‘The Man Behind the Curtain’
Locke demands to be taken to Jacob, Ben takes him to cabin… but Esau is using it
Ben can’t see, or has never seen, Esau or Jacob
Esau tricks Locke into thinking he is helping Jacob by saying help me
In episode ‘Through the Looking Glass’ there are three scenarios
Esau appears in vision of Walt and tells Locke to stop freighter coming, he hates people coming to the island
Jacob appears in vision of Walt to get Locke to stop freighter as he doesn’t want Oceanic 6 rescued because they are his apostles and he needs them in the war against Esau
It is actually Walt who is somehow projecting himself with his gift, under instructions from Jacob, maybe in a future we haven’t seen yet, to stop the rescue of the Oceanic 6 for the reason above.
It should be noted that Walt is special, and from evidence of past episodes, it is hinted he has the ability to affect electromagnetism, could allow projection etc, and appear in places he isnt supposed to be - I think he will play a role in season 6
In episode ‘Cabin Fever’
Locke goes to see Esau, in form of Christian, who tells him to move the island and in turn he will leave it, so that he can come back dead and Esau can manifest as him
The island is moved and the survivors skip through time - creating the loophole that Esau wants
In episode ‘Because you left’
Locke flashes through time and Esau, already posing as Locke in 2007, can tell Locke that he must die to get the Oceanic 6 back
When Locke’s body arrives on Ajira 316, Esau assumes his form and leads Ben to temple, tricking him with his daughter, and eventually gets him to kill Jacob
However, Jacob has been setting up his defence in the game for a long time… and will live on through his ‘apostles’ - Jack and the other survivors…. Maybe when they all get back together, with a dead body like Locke, Jacob can be reincarnated and become Locke.
