The only reason I'm posting this is because I've read other theories stating otherwise, I would stick my neck out and call this a fact.
What was Faraday doing in Ann Arbor for the Dharma Initiative? I think it is obvious he was on a team designing the Lamplight station so his friends in the future (and mother) could find the island and try to offset "whatever happened, happened". Sorry but I think a "Duh!" is in order.
My evidence is this:
1: He never told anyone when he returned to the island on the sub what he was doing in Ann Arbor. He must have been doing something relevant to the show or else his absence as a season regular is unknown. As far I know he wasn't doing any other TV or movie projects? I could be wrong, but I don't think I am.
2: I felt that when Hawking told the O6 that the Lamplight was designed by a "very clever man", she said with the pride a mother would have for her son. This is what actually what nailed it for me. Even though this came before evidence 1:.
3: It's obvious that Ann Arbor is responsible for all goings on with Dharma. If a station is built, instruction comes from Ann Arbor. That's why Dan went there. I am sure we will see this next year in a Faraday flashback.
Anyway, hate to sound so sure on myself, but to me this one is a gimme. I apologize if someone posted this before me, I must have either have missed it or it is so obvious no one has bothered posting.
Let me know what you think!
