It seems obvious to me now why Jack, Kate, Hurley and Sayid travelled through time after crashing again and why Ben, Locke and Sun did not. Originally, the Oceanic 6 were "not meant to leave" the island. Locke was supposed to move the wheel. Jack, Kate, Hurley and Sayid would have moved through time like Sawyer, Juliet, Faraday, Miles and Charlotte did and ended up in Dharma as well, causing the events and "whatever happened..." Ben, like Richard and the rest of the Others, would not have travelled through time and stayed in the present. This leaves Sun, who was pregnant with Ji Yeon and seeing as there is pregnancy issues on the island, she would have to have left in order to mother her child and return. This only leaves me wondering if Locke would have had another off-island objective seeing as the O6 would not have been there, or maybe he would bring Sun back. The other explanation is that the Island or Jacob ! knew the O6 would leave and so Locke would have to move the island, leave and get them. Either way, as in some other theories i've read, leaving the island may have been a series of events that steered the survivors away from their destiny.
