I am convinced now more than ever that the island is the Lost city of Atlantis!! It seems to make sense once you compare the two. The Lost city of Atlantis was said to have "advanced technology" and superior individuals and yet we see the island on lost to have a "magical" smoke monster amongst other things and appear to have knowledge of time travel.
Atlantis was said to have been swallowed by the sea and as we saw in the season finale the Lost island appeared to have been swallowed by the sea once Ben turned the wheel.
It was also told that some of the residents of Atlantis fled to different parts of the world which would explain the similar pyramids of Egypt and the great pyramids and structures of the Incan and Mayan empires amongst other civilizations. The thought is that the building styles of the city of atlantis (the great temple that we were just introduced too that appears to be the home of the smoke monster) would reflect in the new buildings around the globe. And we have seen that some of the others/hostiles like Charles and Eloise left the island and interacted with the regular world.
We also see how the city of Atlantis would have been protected from outside invaders and that would be that you could only enter on the heading of 305. Well thats just my theory.
