Just a quick little theory.
If Jacob's nemesis (Esau) the fella we saw at the beginning of the season finale who said that he wished he could kill Jacob, is Smokey (after all he was dressed in Black and Jacob was in white), and Smokey's job is to defend the "Island" by killing wicked people who come there to fight,and struggle with each other to no avail (or whatever it was that "Esau" told Jacob); and if Jacob's function on the "Island" it to bring people to life and attract people to the "Island" for the sake of ultimately protecting the "Island" by ending the cycle... then perhaps either of these two mysterious beings have protected Rose and Bernard.
My vote would be that good ol' smokey is protecting R&B and my reasoning is simple. Smokey judges people, we know that, and R7B are good people who have not brought any harm or destruction to the Island, and only want to live out there lives in relaxation with each other. I.E. they are not a threat. And, Consider what Rose told Swayer, Kate, and Juliet, that all they ever do is try to kill each other. Very reminiscent to what "Esau" told Jacob in the finale's opening scene.
Oh, and just for kicks, I'll throw this out there Jacob lives underneath a giant foot, a heel if you like. Lo and behold, Jacob (ܝܰܥܩܽܘܒ; "heel" or "leg-puller") who was the blessed brother came out of Rebacca's womb grasping the heel of his more wicked brother.
Jacob and Esau have been fighting since they were in the womb, and it looks like Esau finally found his loophole.
