Last night's episode showed Mrs. Hawking saying that for the first time, she didn't know what was going to happen. I think the reason she said this is simple: she only had the information that Daniel's notebook and the losties on the island had given to her. Everything that has happened up to this point in 2007 on the island can be communicated with Mrs. Hawking and with Widmore. Daniel's notebook isn't going to have information that goes beyond his "present" when he dies and the losties can only share what has happened up until their "present" on the island. This explains why Mrs. Hawking and all theses others can manipulate events and seemingly see the future, because they knew about "whatever happened". Apparently no one from the future (after 2007) has come back to share anything with Mrs. Hawking, which is why she doesn't know what is going to happen now. This is the extent of her knowledge of what has! happened.
I'm sticking with whatever happened, happened. I do think that if some thing can be significantly changed, that will really open up a can of worms that one final season won't be able to tie up (too many paradoxes and possibilities). Remember that the universe course corrects if something happens that isn't suppose to. This is very important to the lost world. It did time and time again with charlie, and I think that if fight 815 isn't brought to the island by the hatch, then it would be in the same manner flight 316 was. I think what is becoming clear is that everything the losties try to fix in the past only serves to bring about what originally was supposed to happen in the first place. I'm curious as what is so sacred that Mrs. Hawking would be willing to sacrifice her son to see happen. Is what is going to happen essential to the island's protection? To saving the world? Anyway, the island is there in 2007, so they can't destroy the island with the H-bomb. Richa! rd is alive in 2007, which is why Daniel was not going to shoot him in 1977, etc. All variable attempts seem only to serve that even though there may be some variations, whatever happened still ends up happening.
