Since The Man Behind the Curtain it has appeared that the Hostiles and DHARMA were enemies uncomfortably co-existing until The Purge. However, there have been a few signs that the Hostiles and DHARMA are actually linked.
First, DHARMA seems to have
intimate knowledge of the island. Why did the DeGroots pick the Island and how did they know about it? How did they know to build a sonic fence? How did they know to build a house directly over the mechanism to summon smokey?
Second, Charles Widmore has a painting in his office with a Polar Bear and with 'Namaste' written backwards on it. This can not be a coincidence.
Third, Eloise Hawking, a former Hostile, works at the DHARMA Lampost station.
Fourth, DHARMA food drops continued to the Island until at least 2003.
My theory is that Charles Widmore actually founded DHARMA under the cover of the DeGroots and Hanso when he went off Island. He was using DHARMA to exploit the Island for profit (most like the top secret Swan and Orchid stations). The other stations, which most DHAMRA scientists seem to have had very little interest in, were probably just there as cover for the real purpose of making money. Widmore had intimate knowledge of the Island and could easily have informed DHAMRA where to build and how to protect themselves from Smokey. Also as leader of the Hostiles, Widmore could force them into a truce instead of eliminating DHARMA all together.
The REAL reason for the the Purge and Widmore to be exiled was that the Hostiles (perhaps Ben?) discovered that Widmore was behind DHARMA and put an end to it. After being exiled, Widmore now had control over the Lampost and employed his old friend Eloisa Hawking to run it in an attempt to find the Island. He continued the food drops as an act of good faith, hoping someday to return to his people.
