Why has John Locke decided that Jacob must be killed? We have to presume that the island told him to. But what are the ramifications of killing Jacob, and maybe more pertinent... why now? My suspicion is that Jacob is a time traveller, like our Losties. But for some reason, he has been able to change something. The most ominous sounding event in the show seems to be the incident, and when the war comes, I think it may be a war over the outcome of the incident, but faught in present time, involving people who have come from the future.
Okay, my logic leading up to this is long and drawn out, but here we go. The incident as we know it refers to the DHARMA Initiative drilling into the island while constructing the swan station, and unleasing some "cataclysmic" energy. We also belive DHARMA has "contained" this cataclysmic energy with a button releasing pressure every 108 minutes. Faraday, previoiusly a firm believer of "what happened, happened," shows up after 3 years saying that
detonating a nuke might change the past and prevent the crash of flight 815. The problem with his logic is that if 815 doesn't crash no one goes back in time to fire off a nuke and prevent it from crashing. But there seems to be plenty of Dharma left up until the purge. In fact, we know Pierre Change and Radzinsky both survive the incident, while they are both likely near ground zero, therefore, the event really wasn't that cataclysmic. It is much more likely that the nuclear blast IS the containment that requires the button pressing every 108 minutes, therefore causing 815 to crash, eventually sendingour Losties back in time to detonate a nuke, containing the cataclysmic energy. It sure doesn't seem like this happened on it's own, the universe doesn't need time loops, so I don't think nature did this. Yeah, really, I am getting closer to Jacob...
But really, doesn't Widmore make more sense? Widmore faked the plane wreckage, he funded Faraday's research, and put Dan on the island. We know he was on island to experience the incident, and soon after began to travel on and off island, maybe setting things up to prevent the incident from being as cataclysmic as it might have otherwise been. But Widmore doesn't seem (yet) to be a time traveller, and his actions seem directed toward getting back on island, not necessarily setting something up. If he really wanted back on-island, wouldn't he have been on the freighter with his people. His beef is with Ben, who, while a powerful leader of the others, is starting to seem like a less and less influential character. I'm starting to feel like Ben is someone that is waiting for one final important act.
So let's get onto Jacob. "You don't go to see Jacob." This makes me think Jacob shows up and tells you what to do, the way Locke and Faraday have been with their time travelling. I think Jacob has been flashing through time, using Widmore to help orchestrate the series of events that lead to the nuke being detonated and preventing this cataclysmic release of energy. If not for Jughead, I think everyone on the island would have died, including Ben, Ethan, Widmore, maybe, although less likely, even Richard. The detonation of Jughead near the Swan station also explains the quarantine signs on the hatch, and possibly the injections, if there was a radioactive contamination of the area. Why is the containment of the incident important to Jacob? And what of this war we've been hearing of?
Back to, Why does Locke want to kill Jacob? The Temple. Nearly as ominous sounding as the incident. The others don't seem to spend much time there, present day. We know Rousseau's team entered a crack in the wall sourounding the temple, and we know that a statue existed, but all that remains is the foot. John Locke, the man that wants to Jacob dead, claims he is being instructed by the island. For some reason, I suspect the island likes it's temple, being as it allowed the temple to exist for so long. Maybe it is willing to wage war over it. And when this nuclear bomb made the statue fall and broke a crack in the wall around the temple, who knows what damage it did to the temple proper? So now, the island is pissed, and has sent John Locke to kill Jacob, a time traveller from the future before he begins time travelling. Then, when the incident ends in the death of everyone on the planet, the island will not have to worry about people causing problems in it's lush gr! een jungles ever again.....
Yeah, I know, 110% wrong, but it's a thought...
