Anyone else get that feeling after "Follow the Leader?"
I took it to mean that, that man is actually Jacob. Not to say a bit of Locke isn't actually in there..but still. If I HAD to explain this, I would say:
Jacob isn't a person anymore so much as he is a mind. Miles said the body is just meat, a vessel for our minds. We have also seen the mind jump through time. What we haven't seen is a mind actually switch vessels yet, or maybe we have.
I got the idea that John's "knowing" is from his body being occupied with the all knowing Jacob..just not completely. I believe there is still a piece of John still in there though, don't get me wrong. We have seen this exact same thing before, we just didn't know it.
Look back to Season 1 and Season 2. In Season 1 Locke was mostly Locke, but he was also part Jacob. Locke seemed to have a communion, and a knowledge, that is as of yet..unexplained. If a part of Jacob was with John, it could explain this quite easily. Locke's mind as able to faintly access all the knowledge that Jacob had subconsciously. From the location of the hatch (John said "you can't feel it?" before he found it) to being able to predict the weather..etc
Now look at Season 2 Locke. Nothing like Season 1, he was angrier..more lost..and loosing faith the more the season progressed. Why? Well if the conscious mind is truly the time traveler and electromagnetism is the key to it, you could say that the longer Locke stayed near the hatch..the more Jacob's mind was pulled away from him. The hatch, after all..is the nexus of electromagnetism on the island, even more so than the Orchid. Season 1 Locke seemed more put together because he had a stronger connection with Jacob then, and the more contact he had with the Swan..the less Jacob there was in Locke. It was simply harder to maintain the connection there due to the electromagnetism.
I believe the man we see now is the complete opposite. What we see now is mostly Jacob, and less Locke. The result of Jacob ordering Richard to tell Locke he would have to leave the island, and die. And just as Jacob was, Locke is in essence "trapped" behind a dominant consciousness now. "There's something different about you, John" Richard said. I think we are witnessing Jacob trying to fully return to the physical world, and is using John's body to do it. If he and Locke truly have this connection then it would imply that by "killing Jacob" it is really Jacob trying to kill John. Trying to remove him completely and trying to gain a complete link to the physical world.
Ok, now we can look at Ben. Ben claimed to commune with Jacob and "Locke" said he has never seen him. I believe "him." I believe Ben was doing the same thing as Locke was doing, communicating through the mind. Gaining knowledge and orders through a "knowing" of sorts. Now why Ben? Well we know Ben can speak to dead people, more importantly people who died OFF the island. You could make the assumption that Jacob died off the island and maintains a connection through his mind. Lost in time without a body. A "ghost" if you want to call it that. You could even make the assumption that Jacob died in a cabin Horus built off the island and not on the island at all, and it only appears there because of Jacob's connection. I don't know about that one though.
But anyways, just some thoughts. I don't know why this would be happening and I don't know who all is involved. I do believe what we are seeing now Is Jacob's play to return. And that for some reason, Ben and Richard do not want this to happen. I would assume Jacob is too powerful to have complete control, and that they really do need him, but allowing him to fully be there would be just too dangerous.
Just some thoughts, thanks for reading/rating/commenting. Cheers.
