So this is something I thought about after seeing last nights episode. There was a big reveal that proves one of two things:
a) "Whatever Happened, Happened" isn't true and you can change the past and future.
OR
b) The "new" Locke is not the real Locke that we all know.
Explanation:
In "Follow the Leader" we see Locke take Richard to the Beachcraft and explain to him how a man will come walking out of the jungle with a bullet in his leg and tell Richard what to say to him. As we all know, that man turned out to be the Locke from the past episode....and therefore it was Locke that gave the instructions to himself in the past (through Richard).
So for the people that believed in the "Whatever Happened, Happened" philosophy (including myself) this would be impossible. The WHH theory falls apart when people start influencing their past selves. B/c at some point in this loop of events....at the very beginning....Locke would have had to been stuck at that beachcraft by himself with no help from Richard....and then in the future gone back to help himself....which would have changed the past and the course of the future.
Actually when you start digging into this....you start to realize that if a person goes back in the past and does actions that will have any impact on their life in the future....it blows away the WHH theory....b/c at some point in the beginning of the iteration....they hadn't gone back in time yet....make sense?
So by Locke helping his past self last night....I have come to the conclusion that the WHH theory is out the door. I think that back in season 3 when Desmond saved Charlie all those times.....he set events into motion that started changing the future......Charlie was alive to go to the Looking glass and shut off the transmitter blocker....Jack was able to call the freighter....the freighter invasion caused Ben to move the island.....moving the island caused the losties to go back in time.
I think the reason there is such a debate over the WHH theory is b/c everything we have seen the losties do in the past....has caused the events that originally happened in the future. In other words, it seems to us that this always happened and the Losties caused the things to turn out the way they did.
but....I think this is b/c things are trying to course correct. Remember Eloise Hawking telling desmond how you can change the past but it will always course correct? She has always seemed like she is trying to help that course correction happen also. Maybe that's why she sent Jack and the rest of the group back. Because so far everything Jack and Kate have done has corrected issues that were set in motion to change the future.
I think someone that returned to the island is going to do something that will change the course of history....I am not sure what that something is.....but I have a feeling that its Hurley and that something is in his guitar case. I think someone made sure that Hurley brought something to the island...that no matter what course correction was done through Jack or whoever....would force a change to the timeline......we shall see
