Jacob's counterpart, let's call him Smokey because I believe them to be one and the same, is the one who visited our Lost friends in the real world. They are his pawns, not Jacobs. In fact, Jacob can only win his game without manipulation so he has no pawns.
Jacob wins when a new group of Islanders finally find redemption and love. i.e. everyone has what Bernard and Rose have.
Smokey on the otherhand feels his point has been proven enough times already. (The Jacob and Smokey discussion takes place even before the Black Rock lands - we see its approach!!!) So the only way for Smokey to win is to end the game by killing Jacob. Something prevents him from doing this himself (rules of the game perhaps) but he finds a loophole; get someone else to do it.
We know he has been planning Jacob's death since then. But does not find the loophole until sometime after the Darma initiative.
We know it is not Jacob who brings the Lost crew to the island either time because, as Mishuma so eloquently listed, this person
1. Gives the pen to Sawyer to write his, 'I will get even letter'
2. Allows Kate to be spared punishment of a crime she committed.
3. Disrupts Jacks train of thought about his dad who he knew was right, and mentions something to make it turn around that his dad was just being a jerk.
4. Hurley, is given the "You are so special" line that we have heard before. I feel that this was emotional manipulation because he knew that is all he needed to do.
5. Sun/Jin nothing comes to mind.
6. Allows Sayid's wife to die.
Mishuma, its not that we cannot trust Jacob, its that THAT was not not Jacob.
