I'm starting to think that white-shoed Christian is in fact Jacob (or himself; and emphasis on 'white'). I think the writers had his character change clothes for a VERY significant reason, especially since it was after 4 seasons. ALSO, notice how in S4 we see him dressed in much darker clothes (and shoes) in the cabin (the cabin being occupied by Mr. X), but then, in a flash forward, we see him visit Jack in his white tennis shoe suit again! Idk, maybe I'm looking too much into it or maybe Jacob's power extends off-island and Mr. X's doesn't? And maybe those not of the purest heart (Christian) are able to be manifested by both parties? Or are certain "dead" really themselves sometimes with the help of Jacob's powers.... All we can do is speculate.
But think about it. White-shoed Christian seems to be of good nature (water-spring, talking with Vincent in the minisode or whatever, and other things. And don't argue that 'well, he caused Jack to almost go over a cliff' because I think that was intentional to get him more acquainted with Locke). Plus, if those coming, like Jacob said, are those from the 70's, the apparition of Christian (white shoed) as seen by Jack in the hospital obviously led to Jack's eventual breakdown; knowing he needed to go back to the island (to be a variable in countering Mr. X's loophole and prooving him wrong).
PLUS, I remember hearing the writers say there was a significance to shoes. We also have certain apparitions dressed either very dark or very light (or some part noticibly white). We have Christian all of a sudden dressed in dark clothes (and shoes) in the cabin. We have Ben's mother dressed in a light blue dress (and white sandals I believe?) Any others you've noticed? EDIT: not necessarily just shoes but one's apparel.
Phew. Kinda got carried away there, but sometimes it helps to follow a train of thought u kno :)
I'm just looking for clues to differing apparitions (like those in dreams, but I'll stop here as I've now exhausted myself :p).
