Whatever Happened, Happened is an expression of hard determinism.
Such a view would roughly state that given the make-up (physical and psychological) of the people involved, the nature of the universe and their experiences up to the moment of a decision, their actions are inevitable and free will is an illusion.
So whatever happened in the past, is what will happen in the future.
BUT when one of those constants is varied -- most likely by someone with a knowledge of the future that was not present in the original decision process such as Desmond's condition of being unlocked from time -- THEN true change would be possible.
Up until this point, the futility of action was linked to the participants ignorance of what originally happened. The only way the timeline will change, is by the intervention of someone with specific knowledge as to machinations causing the original timeline.
I think the incident is inevitable. I think any actions to prevent the incident will prove to be the cause of the incident.
BUT, I think that knowledge will be gained by the group that will allow them to change the future and that the war foretold in season six will center on a faction of people trying to stop the Lostees from implementing this knowledge.
