After watching The variable I am still under the impression that wh,h is still how time travle works in the lost universe. The main reason for beliving this is the fact that Mrs Hawking knew that she would eventually kill her son. It is why she seems upset when she tell Daniel that he cant play piano, she knows that from the moment she closed the lid she had put him on the course where he would discover time travel, be sent to the island and then eventually to be killed by her. She always knew that she was going to kill Daniel and that nothing can be done.
What we saw happen in the variable is what always happend, Daniel always spoke to Jack and Kate about his idea that people can exicute there own will, he always went to the others camp and he always died at the hands of his mother. What Daniel said is the catalyst for the incident. Now that Jack is under the impression that he can change everything, he will try and exicute daniels plan of detonating Jughead and stoping the constructuin if the sawn. However it is these events that actually cause the incident.
Maybe the detination of the bomb will cuase some kind of reaction with the elcetro magnetic engery of the island like many have sugested or it may be even just that they are unable to stop it in time.
