I'm not buying into any of these "______ is Jacob theories." You can present "evidence" for 1/2 the people on the island. Are Jack, John, and Jack's grandfather the best guesses? Probably. But that's all they are...guesses. And it does come back to the fact that Jacob had been on the island prior to 1977, although I think this could be explained (read on). Honestly, if I was a gambling man, I'd go with someone from the DHARMA Initiative, like Hanso. Seems like Hanso just kind of disappeared without explanation. But as I said, there's really no proof.
I think Jacob is being held against his will. Think about the circle of salt or sand around his cabin. This can be done to keep evil spirits out, but couldn't it also be done to keep a spirit in? I believe that someone (maybe Richard) trapped Jacob.
The Room 23 video repeated, "We are all prisoners of time and space." This may apply to Jacob. He is a prisoner, trapped somewhere in time and space. He may bounce around in time and space (i.e. moving cabin). Maybe it was an accident (possibly an incident). THIS means that Jacob could be almost anyone—he could have been trapped in any time period and, because he bounces through time, he also existed PRIOR to being trapped.
Being trapped could also explain why Ben says Jacob is afraid of technology. I think this is B.S. I think Jacob craves technology because technology could possibly free him. It makes sense because the opposite of what Ben typically says is what turns out to be the truth.
Richard and whoever is the acting leader use the illusion of Jacob (like an island god) to force their people to do what they want.
When Locke says he doesn't believe in Jacob, he is saying he doesn't believe in Richard and Ben's illusion of this island god. I believe that Locke knows what Jacob is...a man who is trapped, being used to control the others, and who is begging to be freed.
When he begged Locke, "Help me," he was either asking to (1) be killed and put out of his misery, or (2) helped to be freed from enslavement.
Here is what I think will happen in the finale: I think whatever Jack and Co do in the 70’s will cause the Incident which will trap Jacob. In 2007, Locke will “pull back the curtain” and reveal the true identity of Jacob or (this will really suck if they do this), Locke will pull back the curtain, the viewers won’t see Jacob, but Locke will and he will say something like, “It’s you,” and leave us hanging until Season 6 to find out who Jacob is.
