" That was quite the out of body experience." and the whole chicken and egg scene it involved. Which blew my mind, loved it! Hate it too, realized I based the idea that they had to come back because Richard said, and now he only said that because Locke just told him, and Locke did that because Richard told him, because he told Richard.... and so on and so on and so on!!
This show has masterfully created a huge debate on what kind of Time Travel is going on. So, they have already been truthful in saying it will be used in away that hasn’t been done before, I don’ t think there has been any show or movie that has created such confusion and controversy.
I do think the Time Travel is an important to the show as another element to the story telling. The two most popular theories are whether its an Alternate Time Line (ATL) or Whatever Happened Happened (WHH). Do you believe this is the first time to the past, and them being there is possibly changing something or that they are there to change something, hence there destiny (ATL) Or do you believe they have always been in the past and nothing can change. And its there destiny already written and they are there to just maintain the timeline. A lot of people who entertain the idea of a ATL or Parr ell universe, look at the statement of WHH as meaning you can not change the outcome, because of course-correction, that the events may change like Charlie being alive longer, but still has the same result. (Charlie dies) WHH can say, well, Des was always going to delay Charlie’s death. If you do not believe that, then you look at what happened after as a ripple effect. But if you do! believe Des was predestined to save Charlie for a while, then there is no ripple effect. In this one case in particular though, it feels like that is reaching. For if we are assuming the universe is all powerful, then why try to kill Charlie oh so many times just so Des can save him. Maybe once, as a test or something, but not 5 times. This season will end, and TT should become a thing of the past for next season.
What they have successfully done is create dialogue between people, something to debate about. Each theory of TT, gives the person who believes it a definite path, and most theories are shaped by your personal TT theory. And therefore, many theories get debunked or at least tested by the opposite theory because they will always use that to through in the mix. So for example, some people noticed some differences in the others camp when Sun and Frank were there, and it was disputed by WHH saying well, we just didn’t see that part of the camp. Because it would go against that theory, can’t be WHH if something can change, and maybe those details were thrown into to confuse. But it’s those details that cause me to question everything. Mainly because this is one show that has brought up how important details are in a con.
What I am most interested in this debate is why some think one way over the other. Do you find the show more enjoyable to think they can change things, or do you find it more enjoyable to be watching something that has played out but we are just seeing it, do you like change or do you not like change? Or is it a core belief system. The idea that the past and the future are already written and we are there to witness it, and be led but not to lead. For the one aspect that lacks in watching these characters go through these things is if they were predestined to do it due to this wheel going to be turned. Some of them weren’t even born yet, does this mean people are not blank slates, and we are to be whomever the universe says? Or is it that all time happens at once, there is free will but the choices they have made, even though they are trying to change something is actually changing something. For we can say Sayid always shot Ben, and too Sayid he did that to change somethi! ng, fact is he did, he changed Ben to be the person we love and hate. And for that we can thank him, he just didn’t change him into something other than he already was.
I have also noticed a lot of people really cling to one theory and not necessarily have anything to back it up that would stand up in a debate. Or have lots of reasons some good, and some so far out in left field you would think you were watching a baseball game, not reading a Lost theory. Others like to Regurgitate Faraday’s theory without really looking into it, (miles does this too) because if you do then you have to see that the “past” they are living in now, that Sawyer, Juliet etc. have been living in for the past 3 years, is real to them. It’s the present to them, as it is to all those they live with. Once they get out of this time, which I am fairly certain they will, life doesn’t stop for dharma until the purge. Miles will have to grow up to even TT to begin with as will Dan and Charlotte will have to leave to come back to die. Because that is what happened, and the wheel is turned that sends them back there. This is as we have seen it, but the fact is tho! se things will still happen because they did already. You would also believe if you live at the WHH camp, that this was all predestined because the wheel is to be turned in 2004. For it that didn't happened then none of them would have been there to TT to begin with. So you have to ask yourself, do you believe 815 was destined to crash because of 2004 wheel turning, but this was decided in 54,74 etc… or do you believe this is the result?
I lean more to the possibility that all of these that are happening now, both now as in 2007 and now as in 1977 are the result of 815 crashing. If the plane did not crash then history would have been different, but thus since it did this is how it has played out. I do not believe this was always going to be the case either, one of these characters. Widmore, Ben, Eloise, or some dharma person has created this future, which in turn created this past, which creates this future.
“ Those who do not remember history are doomed to repeat it”
Normally this statement is not meant to be taken literally. You ate some chicken and swallowed a bone on a Wednesday, you time travel back in time and you do it again because you forgot to not eat the chicken. So in this situation the lesson is to be careful when eating chicken, if you don’t remember that you swallowed the bone and you let another little one slip through, you will have a full week of bloating, pain and indigestion (true story)
So wouldn’t those who have TT, if they always TT, subconsciously know they have already played this out since the 70’s happened before 2004? They would have had to merge with themselves (we do not see themselves running around, well yet) or is this being written with the idea that there is no soul. If they are unaware and not in touch with their subconscious, wouldn’t they be doomed to repeat the same mistakes? If they were in touch, they would know what was worthy of repeating.
They have also successfully gotten a lot of people distracted, thinking about TT more than maybe other aspects. Which could possibly be for the purpose of having a huge shocker of a cliffhanger at the end of this season. They may never resolve this debate either, we may never know what the truth was, and we may stay lost.
